This book teaches children when something goes wrong they need to tell the adult in their life about it.

It isn’t until the end of the book that we find out that Douglas is actually a young bear, and he couldn’t find the right hug because his mom hadn’t woken up yet.

All of these books are great for older children too, but I’ve chosen these because they work particularly well for this age group. Hugless Douglas is very excited about Rabbit's sleepover, but he collects so many friends along the way that soon it's a big squash in Rabbit's small burrow! Pooh has Piglet but this poor chap has no one to take his affections out on and a bear-hug is probably not everyone's cup of tea so he has work set out for him. Roadworks shows a road being built from start to finish, and Demolition shows a building being demolished step by step.

I thought I’d post my top 5 read alouds for 2-5 years, 5-8 years and 8-12 years in case anyone is looking for great read alouds for their children or their class. David Melling is the king of picture books and I love both his wonderful words and his marvelous illustrations. But when the surprise turns out to be his over-excited twin cousins, Douglas is sure this will be the worst birthday ever! One of his most popular picture books The Tale of Jack Frost was animated and shown on BBC1 on Christmas Day.

The humour is the great selling point here, and young book fans will have big smiles on their faces as Douglas falls afoul of his hugged items. Here is a selection of heart-warming books about teddies, or about bears who are cuddly and love hugging. This very special anniversary edition of Hugless Douglas’ first adventure is a must for fans of this much-loved series, which has sold over 1. Especially created for World Book Day 2014 and starring the much-loved Hugless Douglas, this charming story follows Douglas and his friends through a fun-filled day. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. They particularly like the descriptions that accompany the hugs, 'Daisy chain hug', 'unrequited hug' and I shan't spoil any of the others . David Melling is one of the UK's best-loved author-illustrators and his stories combine brilliantly imaginative illustrations with an endearing sense of what it is like to be a small child learning about the world.
