There is a solid 36 page chunk in the middle of the book that serving serves as a scrapbook for of the twins’ more material influences -childhood images, vintage book covers, LPs, mementos from famous friends. So far, I've only read three of the chapters, but however much a vanity project this is, it is pretty informative for a fashion-world neophyte like myself. Influence is about Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen interviewing some of the most influential people in art and fashion. When I heard last year that the Olsen twins would be releasing a book chronicling their fashion influences, my mind immediately flashed towards the Paris Hilton-penned Confessions of an Heiress - after all, it seemed like another set of tabloid darlings were trying to add “author” to their resumés.

Although I did enjoy reading about some of the artists and designers and their creative processes, this was way too self indulgent. The first, interview, with Peter Beard, does not bode well for the rest of the book; it's a bit trite, but I blame the subject rather than the Olsens, and things do improve after that.

How very clever- there's about a couple of pages of them writing about them, many photos, and the rest are interviews with the artists and designers they admire and are inspired by. The subjects are people that influence the girls but they are all designers in someway except model/actress.

I keep reading that people thought this book made them conceited flying to all these different places and talking to the big names of the fashion and art world. And no, it's not all the things I thought I would glean, which is that the Olsens are spoiled brats who like to go to fancy restaurants all over the world to interview their fashion heroes and turn it into a vainglorious and largely self-serving, heavily illustrated coffee table book. The book takes us through interviews with Designers such as Christian Louboutin, Karl Lagerfeld and so many more influential people from the fashion industry, often annotated and presented like the girls' own notebook with highlighted sections and scribbles dotted around the pages.Lots of beautiful, high-quality photos of the Olsens as well as of famous people and LOTS of fashion items - drawings, exhibits, artwork, etc. There's a pretty heavy-handedness to Mary Kate's love of Warholian culture just in terms of who she interviews and the questions involved. Also candid and revealing letters from famous people as well as personal letters from one Olsen twin to the other. Just an oversized book filled with their influences(none of whom I even know)and nothing interesting in my opinion.
