About this deal

Thank you to NetGalley, Random House and the author Ruth Jones for the opportunity to review this wonderful book. Ruth Jones is best known for her outstanding and award-winning television writing, most notably BBC One's Gavin and Stacey, which she co-wrote with James Corden and in which she played the incorrigible Nessa Jenkins. Love Untold is the first book I’ve read by Ruth Jones, but after loving it I’ve added her others to my (ever-growing) list. Love Untold tells the stories of four generations of women, mothers and daughters set in South Wales. The book starts with Elin, a headteacher, who is organising a surprise 90th birthday party for her grandmother who brought her up when her mother was unable to, despite her grandmother having said that she didn’t want a party.

It shows how complicated and complex any relationship can be, but also how wonderful and uplifting even in the darkest moments that the maternal bond gives you. This heart-warming story about Grama Grace and her descendants is eventful and fraught with misunderstanding. But Grace’s granddaughter, Elin, is also estranged from Alys and any reconciliation will cause huge problems in the family. The conflicts and emotions are real and raw and you’ll find yourself relating to so many arguments and points of tension.

This book looks at multi generation female relationships and familial ties as well as what bonds and binds mothers and daughters. Sounded too familiar - as I was the great-granddaughter in my family until I lost my great-nan when I was 24, I just had to read this to see how the dynamics worked between the 4! THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER***'Love, mess, secrets; this story of four generations of women is filled with Ruth Jones's warmth and wisdom. I particularly liked the dynamic Soozi, Beca’s friend, a talented singer who says what she thinks, usually accompanied by swearing. Nothing much will it seems, but finding her true self is much more important and in that she also finds her love for her music.I was completely captivated by this character-driven story of mother/daughter relationships and really cared about the characters; I was genuinely sad to finish it and leave them all behind. It is a story that tenderly portrays a broken family, outlining the complexities that define history, with an ending that is both heart-breaking, yet uplifting at the same time. Noticed another reviewer mentioned she disliked the way RJ often leaves the endings off words, ie, "nothin" instead of "nothing and "somethin", not "something". A respected head teacher at the local school, Elin couldn't bear anyone to find out the truth about her mother.
