Mrs Harris is a wonderful creation – and perhaps equally wonderful, in my eyes, is her timid but loving friend Mrs Butterfield. This time, unbeknown to her, she becomes embroiled in a political plot and inadvertently gets elected to Parliament! Sometimes that sting is extremely dark (as in the very brilliant Love of Seven Dolls), sometimes it’s fey ( Jennie), but it’s always there.I have read and loved other Paul Gallico and Mrs Harris novels and think of them as beautifully written 'comfort' reading.

It’s all quite silly, with (in this one perhaps more than the others) a note of the serious – and if you are sick of deceitful or boring politicians, or of a government that sidelines the poor, then this might provide some much-needed respite. Harris Goes to New York" (which I am currently in the midst of reading), and concludes with this 3rd adventure that propelled the most unlikely of candidates into a seat as a member of Parliament. She's yet a woman with determination and spunk, a big heart, and a sometimes brash way of speaking her mind. They are a delightful glimpse into their place and time, and people who try to do the right thing by one another.
