About this deal

This book was just up my street for any educators who don't believe that one size fits all you'll enjoy this read immensely and be revitalised by it. I choć bardzo mi się podobała, różnice między nią a ekranizacją były tak duże, że nie spełniła moich oczekiwań. I read that she disliked the film because the directors picked up on those saintly undertones and went to the extreme with it. Johnson recounts her real-life encounters with "problem" teens, sharing her strategies, challenges, frustrations and extremely inspiring and moving experiences. While her Marine Corps training helped, Johnson found the caring parts of her personality more effective in dealing with the recalcitrant students she met as a teacher of English at ``Parkmont High,'' an inner-city school in California.

Her methods did not follow the educational theories all teachers must study but simply proves that theory versus reality is vastly different. This site uses cookies to deliver our services, improve performance, for analytics, and (if not signed in) for advertising.

I had very little input to the movie and much of it is fiction, at times so far removed from fact as to be ridiculous. I guess the filmmakers felt making her so mean and angry would make for a better, more enjoyable viewing experience. Kevin McManus of The Washington Post also praised the acting, though he wrote that the film "merits only a C", in part because of the script's lack of subtlety and the saccharine lines given to the students. To protect the anonymity of contributors, we've removed their names and personal information from the essays. As far as comparing and contrasting goes, the books are more personal, and definitely more authentic. I don’t think the Hollywood film makers are intentionally perpetuating stereotypes and simplistic plot lines. To me, it is very interesting reading a story based on troubled students in high school who find a way to improve themselves for the greater good.

This bullshit people believe that school is safer than anything else in the world is exactly that: bullshit. Her situation is relevant today, and her willingness to put the outside world aside and provide a forum where students felt comfortable enough to open up about the socio-economic and emotional hardships of the way money divides social classes even in the education system made all the difference.

I liked Johnson's narrative arc and the way she does move away from the idea that teachers can solve all of the problems that their students face.
