If I took time to talk about all the characters that touched my heart this review would be the length of a book! Like Bald Eagles and Ospreys, Common Loons dine on fish, receiving the full dose of toxins, such as mercury, as they accumulate up the food chain. Nightingales, while unmistakably beautiful-sounding, are much rarer in Britain, found only in parts of southern and central England during the spring and summer. This sediment resonates throughout the novel giving hope to the hopeless and courage for everyone to do their part and let God do the rest.

Slowly, Lilliana finds revival and friendship in No Creek—with precocious eleven-year-old Celia Percy, with kind-hearted Reverend Jesse Willard, and with Ruby Lynne Wishon, a young woman whose secrets could destroy both them and the town.

These expert mimics find inspiration in the songs of other birds and sometimes rock their tunes around the clock. With war brewing for the nation and for her newfound community, Lilliana must overcome a hard truth voiced by her young friend Celia: Wishing comes easy. Her gradual willingness to stand up for other victims, even though she once failed to do so for herself, is encouraging. Ecosystems around the planet host a surprising variety of night birds—from nightingales and mockingbirds to corncrakes, potoos, and whip-poor-wills—whose voices can be as haunting (or exciting) as any owl hoot.
