I think if the major points that come across in the last few chapters were brought forward a bit it would have been way better.Berry’s background as a clinical psychologist shines in this novel with a character so disturbed they spend time in seclusion lockdown at a psychiatric ward. More recently, sailors in today's round-the-world races often experience disturbing hallucinations, including seeing elephants floating in the sea and strangers taking the helm, or suffer complete psychological breakdown, like Donald Crowhurst. As at least one other reviewer pointed out, this story could likely have been told much better from different perspectives – maybe the two boys (even the one who dies in the opener – maybe in an “if i stay” type manner? I DONT LIKE THE USAGE OF THE SCHOOL SHOOTING ASPECT THAT COULD HAVE BEEN HANDLE WAAAAY DIFFERENTLY OR NOT AT ALL SHE BROUGHT UP THE KILLER AND COULDVE USED THAT OR HAD JULES BE THE ONE HOLDING HIM CAPTIVE BECAUSE SHE WENT OFF THE DEEP END AND USED HIM AS A REPLACEMENT SON? In this moving novel, Berry creates a beautifully crafted study of secrets and grief among a tight-knit group of friends and of how far a mother will go to discover the truth and protect her children. The story itself, the true story, is the one that the audience members create in their minds, guided and shaped by my text, but then transformed, elucidated, expanded, edited, and clarified by their own experience, their own desires, their own hopes and fears. Overall though, this *is* a five star review, so I’m going to recommend you read this book – if for no other reason than maybe I’m wrong and there was genuinely a great tale in here that I just didn’t pick up on?
