Plain Girl is written simply and sweetly by Virginia Sorensen, author of Newbery winner Miracles on Maple Hill. This is the third book I read by Sorensen and every time I take something away from her edifying stories. An attractive lid fold has a generous fullness and rounded shape and is parallel to the lid margin at the lashline, unlike the flaccid curtain that it tends to deteriorate into, with aging. It's very common for young women to want to change their looks in some way through using makeup or changing their hairstyle. Being plain doesn't mean that a woman isn't attractive; it just means that her face has no special features that would make it interesting or beautiful. There is no need to wear makeup or do anything else to be plain because your natural beauty is enough. To obtain that attractive lid look requires the formation of a proper, internal lid crease, which is not part of a standard blepharoplasty. Have you got a mini Serena Williams in the making? I didn’t find her especially likeable but I believe the fault there lies with Miller and not his creation. We can only work with what he provides and he is stingy with the facts. An easy read with some nice passages, especially the final chapter, but I never thought of her as a girl anywhere throughout the book, in fact the book begins and ends with her in her sixties. We’ve all been there, woken up to see glorious sunshine streaming in through the curtains, left the house in our vest and flip flops only for the heavens to open an hour later and to realise we’ve got no way of staying dry.
