About this deal

Over a week starting on Sunday evening, Nov. 19, the waxing moon will visit four planets in succession — Saturn, Neptune, Jupiter, and Uranus. Jupiter is in conjunction with the Sun on 11 April and not visible this month. With no major Moon interference, the 2023 Lyrid meteor shower peak on the night of 22/23 April is looking favourable. A simple way to find the Andromeda Galaxy M31 is to start in the top-right (northwest) of the Great Square, at Scheat (Beta (β) Pegasi). Inferior conjunction 1 May, Mercury is poorly placed in the morning sky thereafter, so it is unlikely to be seen. The moon's next visit with a planet will be on Tuesday evening, Nov. 21. Tonight, the 67%-illuminated, waxing gibbous moon will shine a palm's width to the lower right of distant blue Neptune. At the beginning of the month, the magnitude -4.4 " morning star" will rise in southeastern Leo at around 3:30 a.m. local time. Both planets reach opposition this month. Jupiter is at opposition on 3 November, Uranus on 13 November. This month the constellations Lyra and Cygnus are seen almost overhead as darkness falls with their bright stars Vega, in Lyra, and Deneb, in Cygnus, making up the "summer triangle" of bright stars with Altair in the constellation Aquila below. (see sky chart above) Lyra Well-positioned evening planet, reaching 60o altitude. Shrinks from 14-10 arcseconds over the month. Credit: Pete Lawrence In our guide, we useUniversal Time (UT) and British Summer Time (BST). UT is the standard time used by astronomers around the world. BST is one hour ahead of UT You can locate Mars by researching where it is located in relation to constellations. Use a star chart to orient yourself in the night sky, learn where constellations are, and use them as landmarks to find Mars.

Named for the god of fertility in the Rapanui mythology of the Easter Islands, the dwarf planet Makemake is one of the many interesting not-quite-planetary objects in our solar system. Even better, the annual best night to see Makemake occurs early in the year.It ends at a triangular pattern representing the northern fish, which is hard to make out. Andromeda The Andromeda Galaxy, by Yann Sainty, Lorraine, France, 22-23 August 2022 Busy schedules, light pollution, the weather: sometimes finding even just 30 minutes to stand and stare up at a clear, dark night sky and take in the planets, stars and constellations can be a feat in itself. Then, I give a list of highlights for 2023: Eclipses, meteor showers, conjunctions, transits, and so on. These events only happen on specific dates, so plan ahead to see them. On Monday, Nov. 13 Uranus will reach opposition — the night of the year when it is closest to Earth at a distance of 1.74 billion miles, 2.78 billion km, or 155 light-minutes.
