About this deal

Since Sir Chunks was getting dings and scrapes applied over the whole model, it would’ve looked pretty weird if the freehand escaped similar harm, so I threw in some extra scrapes over the top, at which point… job done. Focus on areas around the edges of armour panels, as well as hands and fingers. How to Paint Imperial Fists Step 11 – Edge Highlighting, Part 2 If in doubt as to what should or shouldn’t be painted with metallic colours, refer to the box art. How to Paint Imperial Fists Step 16 – Basecoats, Part 3 Start Competing: Astra Militarumcovers playing Guard in Warhammer 40k 8th edition. It hasn’t been updated yet with the new content from Psychic Awakening V: The Greater Good, but you can find our review of that content here until we update the larger guide.

If you’re using a drybrush, make sure you brush fairly lightly. You might find it useful to brush in only one direction, so from the top down. How to Paint Imperial Fists Step 9 – Remove Masking To contrast the blue armor, I usually go with a mauve color for capes, tabards, grips, ropes, and loincloths found throughout the Space Marines range. Balthasar Gold– This brass paint is another great complement to Averland Sunset. It adds warmth and metallic accent to the orange tones, and it can also be used for details and highlights. Our readers might be surprised to learn that not all painting is done on models! I painted this picture of my beloved yet troublesome cat, Mini, at a “drink wine and paint stuff” event hosted by my employer in what I think was the Spring of 2012. This picture was taken in the Summer of 2011, when Mini was still a wee kitten.

Step 1. Basecoats

Hey gang, it’s your boi deezy. Y’all have seen my Raven Guard in HTPE: Raven Guard, but before that project, I was working on my Steel Legion. While I consciously attempted to elevate my painting with the Raven Guard project, my prime directive whilst painting Steel Legion was to get them on the table . This method was effective, as I have over 7,000 points of Steel Legion fully painted. While they look good, especially when massed for battle, they are not up to my standard of painting anymore. I still love them, though. No doubt about it. Infantry White Armor: Like the rank and file Valhallans, I painted these whole models in Steel Legion Drab first. The armor was based with Ulthuan Grey (my secret weapon, holy shit this color is so useful) and down in two coats. I washed the recesses with Agrax Earthshade, then highlighted up with Corax White. The Imperium is massive, and its core strength comes from its people. There is rarely, if ever, an Imperial conflict that doesn’t involve the Astra Militarum and its forces. As such, they’ve been involved in every major conflict in the Imperium’s history, from the Horus Heresy and the battle for Terra, where Solar Auxiliaries helped defend the Emperor’s Palace, to the Fall of Cadia and the ensuing Indomitus Crusade. The guard are made of a great many regiments whose deeds are legendary, from the Steel Legions of Armageddon to the indomitable forces of Cadia, who held even after the planet itself was destroyed. Where to Read More Whilst this is called “warm” grey, it;s actually a cool bluish grey, that colder tone will have more colour contrast against the warm yellow armour tones of the armour. A neutral or warm grey would look dull. I started with a base of Khorne Red. I know I said brighter colors but since I’m not using washes this will give me the darker low points on his costume. For the purple parts I used Xereus Purple.

There are some freehand elements that are much more easily done with stencils and airbrushing. If it’s easier to cut a stencil of your design than it is to use a brush, don’t be a masochist. Everything in this article, however, is about those times when you’re doing it by hand. Or those times when you don’t own an airbrush.

Edition Noise Marines were a lot less uniform in color, using mostly dark armor with lots of bright pink, blue, and yellow trim to go with the metal models that came out about 6 months after Codex: Chaos released. They’re pretty wild models on the whole, and unlike nearly anything else in the Chaos range. try to focus the paint onto the nose, brow and cheekbones if you can. How to Paint Imperial Fists Step 12 – Basecoats, Part 1 I know we already covered it, but this becomes an even bigger deal when you’re trying to go hog wild on the detail. There is no finer shortcut to visual assery than declaring “I know what X looks like.” This becomes doubly true if you’re trying to paint anything more complex than a basic icon. As an epilogue for Wolverine, he turned out pretty cool with the Indian/Brilliant Ink blend but I wanted to go a different direction with him. I ended up hand-painting over his ink yellow with a mix of Citadel’s Averland Sunset & Yriel Yellow. I made sure to paint around the blended ink yellow in the recesses of his muscles which created a lovely effect that I’m quite happy with. Use these techniques on any of your Imperial Fists models to create a whole army of gritty, grimy Imperial Fists – Space Marines – in no time at all.

Now I know that yellow is a pain. I've found numerous good YT videos on the topic, and particularly liked Darren Latham's video, here. Blood Angels: The Blood Angels are one of the most recognizable Space Marine Chapters in the Warhammer 40K universe. Averland Sunset can be used to paint the iconic red armor of the Blood Angels, giving them a more natural and realistic look. The warm tones of the paint will complement the red of the armor perfectly, making them look like they have been through many battles. As always, wait for the paint to dry fully before moving on to the next stage. How to Paint Imperial Fists Step 4 – Reinforce Shadows

Step 5. Final Details

Mix a drop of Ultramarine’s blue in with 3 or 4 drops of Duraluminium. We don’t want the metal areas to look obviously blue, but we want a slight blue tint to it so that the metal areas are in the cool spectrum. As with the white areas above, this will add more contrast. The mix should not look to be blue, just ca colder metal colour in general. Answer is… run real light on infantry, convert lots of monsters and vehicles and Rough Riders and Ogryns, and lose plenty of games! At least that’s my technique. Closest thing to ‘real’ advice would be “paint in squads of ten, break them up with fun centerpiece models.”

Lenses: I went with blue for contrast. I started with Kantor Blue, with crescents of Altdorf Guard Blue and Fenrisian Grey on the bottom. For the top where the “light” catches, I just did a dot of Nuln Oil then Corax White. Next up, we’re going to paint the face. If you’re using an airbrush, you’ll need to make sure all the areas of the figure you don’t want to get flesh colours on are covered up.I do not remember the exact colors or ratios I used to render my sweet daughter on canvas. Looks like there was some grey, purple, yellow, red, and white. Feel free to attempt to paint my lovely companion animal yourself, and share with us the result. Highlight the face masks and squad markings with Ulthuan Grey (Optional: Add a final highlight of White Scar. Fire Dragon Bright, at the very sharpest corner of the inner edges of the eyes, lowest corner of a round lens
