About this deal

Wear a dust mask of a minimum standard of N95, Gloves and Goggles (Not just safety specs!) Cascamite is a carcinogen? In terms of the overall environmental impacts, it was found that Urea-formaldehyde adhesive had a nearly 50% higher life cycle impact than Phenol formaldehyde adhesive. Comparing the energy consumption used in Urea-formaldehyde and Phenol formaldehyde adhesives, Urea-formaldehyde adhesive was much lower than Phenol formaldehyde adhesive. [15] [13] Lignin–phenol–formaldehyde [ edit ] There are many different types of glues and adhesives available at B&Q, each with their own properties. For example, PVA glue is great for woodworking DIY projects, whereas superglue is perfect for smaller, more fiddly jobs like fixing broken jewellery. Epoxy adhesives are great for fixing metal and ceramics because of their super-strong bonding properties. Urea-formaldehyde resin adhesives feature a low effective cost, low cure temperatures, resistance to microorganisms and abrasion, and light color. It does not creep, and can be repaired with epoxy. It can rapidly deteriorate in hot, moist environments, releasing formaldehyde (a carcinogen). [9] [10] [11] Supplied as a fine white powder which is mixed with half its weight of cold water for use. Mixed adhesive remains usable for around three hours depending on temperature. Providing it is kept dry, un-used powder has a shelf-life of up to a year. The adhesive has the ability to fill gaps between ill-fitting components. A popular brand is Cascamite. [12] Cascamite is the best-known brand of powdered resin wood glue but what is it? Cascamite is sometimes referred to as UF but it’s technical chemical name is Urea Formaldehyde . This powdered resin is activated when mixed with water yet once set it is waterproof making an ideal glue for exterior use. Powdered resin wood glue is also known as Urea-Methanol, either way, Cascamite is a known carcinogen so dust masks while mixing are essential. Remember Oak dust is also a Carcinogen so care needs to be taken when working with any form of dust. What else is UF glue used for?

If needed, clamp whilst the glue is wet using pins or screws, keeping the joint under pressure until it has set

hours at 15`CAt higher temperatures the usable life is reduced and in hot weather, it is advisable to mix only sufficient glue for immediate use (standing the mixing vessel in cold water will help prevent shortening of the usable life). APPLICATION

Phenol formaldehyde resin is commonly used for making plywood. It is cured at elevated temperature and pressure. [9] The greenhouse gas emissions is 2.88 kg CO2-eq./kg of PF adhesive. [13] Mixing by weight is recommended, at a ratio of 2 parts Cascamite powder to 1 part water, stirring continuously until all powder is dissolved Lignin adhesives prepared from lignins protected with other aldehydes (for example, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, and furfural showed qualified adhesion performances >0.7 MPa. [21] [22] Mixing powdered resin wood glues of any type such as Cascamite, Polyvine Polymite, and Resintite requires a consistent mixing method. One Shot adhesives are ideal for the smaller user as if they are kept dry and in a cool environment, the shelf life is excellent. PVA’s and liquid UF resins have shorter shelf lives so will lose their ability to give a good bond the older they become.

What is PVA?

I've been looking at boatbuilding techniques based on diagonal wood veneers using the West System or similar epoxies to build a 34ft sailing hull. Fine Woodworking magazine ran a number of tests to evaluate the mechanical resistance of wood joints with different glues: [29] Glue Please note: If bonded wood is to be turned on a lathe, it is recommended the wood be seasoned for a minimum of one week before turning. You can add up to 20% extra water but can only be added at the mixing stage. Adding water once the glue starts it’s chemical reaction will result in the glue curdling. What do I need to mix Cascamite? In lignocellulosic biomass, lignin acts as a glue that provides strength to cell walls by effectively binding cellulose and hemicelluloses together. [18] Milled wood lignin(MWL), formaldehyde-protected lignin (FPL) and acetone-protected lignin adhesives that were prepared with lignins separated under either mild conditions or protection by aldehyde or ketone demonstrated reasonable bonding strengths after hot pressing at 190 °C and 1.5 MPa for 8 min; both the dry and wet adhesion strengths met the minimum requirement of 0.7 MPa. From the results, the slightly condensed or protected lignins from different sources could be directly used as wood adhesives without additional physical or chemical treatments. [19] Adhesion performance of these adhesives improved with reduced condensation degrees and increased with higher hot-pressing temperatures. Multilayer plywood products using lignin adhesives met the mechanical requirements for applications in various fields. [19] [20]

Polyurethane glue (trade names include Gorilla Glue and Excel) is becoming increasingly popular in the USA after being used for years in other countries. It bonds to textile fibers, metals, plastics, glass, sand, ceramics and rubber, in addition to wood. Polyurethane wood adhesives are normally prepolymers terminated with isocyanate groups. When exposed to moisture, isocyanates react with water and thus cure the adhesives. Therefore, one-component polyurethane adhesives are also named as moisture-cure polyurethanes. In addition, interactions between polyurethanes and wood polymers can significantly influence bond performance. [23] Polyurethane glues expand when they cure, improving adhesion where the fit is not tight. Unlike PVA glues, they can be used to glue end grains. Tested by ourselves and many of our experienced customers, we can confirm that this new Cascamite formula is as good as, if not better in performance than the original formula, which was loved by many. NOTE: -At temperatures below 1 10C (5OF), a period of up to 2 or 3 days may be required before the glue sets. During cold weather, it is therefore essential that joints under pressure be kept in a warm place. Gel Time Do not apply in damp conditions, when rain is likely, or in temperatures below 10°C - between 15°C and 20°C is ideal. Poly Vinyl Acetate is what we call PVA wood glue or white glue and also used by carpenters, schools and crafts. This aliphatic rubbery synthetic polymer is probably the most used glue. Formula (C4H6O2)n. Why use Cascamite when PVA is so Easy?
