About this deal

And I always just want to take care of them. Make them feel like - "You don't have to worry about anything right now. We're going to make you look amazing and get your confidence going so that you can go out there." He [Kevyn Aucoin] was very much that. Aucoin made appearances on Good Morning America and The Oprah Winfrey Show. [17] He played as himself in an episode of Sex and the City called "The Real Me" (Season 4, Episode 2), doing Carrie Bradshaw's makeup for a fashion show during New York Fashion Week. In addition, he appeared with Cher in "Gypsies, Tramps, and Weed" (Season 3, Episode 7) of Will & Grace. Kevyn Aucoin: A Beautiful Life—The Success, Struggles, and Beauty Secrets of a Legendary Makeup Artist was published in 2003 by Atria Books and Simon and Schuster. The book was edited by Kerry Diamond and reviewed Aucoin's career through celebrity interviews, his beauty tips and techniques, and over 250 photographs. [19]

On our way walking over to have coffee in the cafe at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center, Tiffany tells me how fascinated she is by the Anna Delvey aka Anna Sorokin story and mentions that Shonda Rhimes had just acquired the rights to the New York magazine article about her. I work in an industry with some of the meanest people who have ever walked the face of the earth, who live and die for the surface. But the way I see it, I have a responsibility to do the most I can do, the way I know how. Since I know how to apply makeup, that's what I do and use it as a platform.

In 1999 he received an honorary diploma from Harvey Milk High School for his support of gay and transgender youth. [17] Personal life [ edit ] Kevyn Aucoin: Beauty & The Beast In Me, a documentary directed by Lori Kaye, features Aucoin's own personal videos taken throughout his life. It premiered as the documentary centerpiece at Outfest in July 2017 and had its TV debut on Logo TV on September 14, 2017. The film was also featured in the 125th anniversary (September 2017) issue of Vogue Magazine. [20] Read this in The Internet Archive. I'm sure the original coffee table book must be more impressive with larger and clearer pictures. But I'm glad I read it anyway. Kevin draws faces with expertise. I liked reading about his past as well and feel very proud that he survived his turbulent adolescence growing up as a closeted gay teen in a conservative small town. Now, he is one of the most notable makeup artists of our generation and seeing him live his truth and release such popular makeup products is very inspiring. The book would be a great introduction to beginners of makeup and fans of Aucoin. Dennis, Alicia (December 11, 2008). "Fashion Influential #44: Kevyn Aucoin". Zimbio . Retrieved March 21, 2018. Aucoin's philosophy was that every woman is beautiful within, and makeup was simply his tool for helping her discover that beauty. He wrote a regular column about this philosophy for Allure. A comment he made in a 2000 column, calling members of the National Rifle Association "morons", drew a record amount of mail and a few death threats. [8]If beauty was a religion, Kevyn Aucoin’s Making Faces would surely be its Bible – the sacred text that offers guidance, delineates right from wrong, is dog-eared beyond recognition and serves as a reference point for everything to come after it. For many, both professionals and otherwise, its ground zero for makeup – a turning point in how (and why) people use it to enhance and alter the way they look and feel. To say it changed the course of an industry would truly be putting it lightly. Today, the Makeup Museum unveils a vast, never-before-seen digital archive of the journals that Aucoin, widely considered the world’s first celebrity makeup artist, kept between 1983 to 1994. They document his Hollywood rolodex (Hello, Tina and Liza!), meetings with all-star collaborators and supermodel confidantes (Cindy, Linda, and Paulina...to name a few), and candid Polaroids snapped on iconic photoshoot sets, from Vogue editorials with Irving Penn to a Chanel campaign with Claudia Schiffer. Altogether, Aucoin’s personal notebooks offer a raw and authentic look into his day to day, the hustle and glamour of it. Kevyn does a really great job of encouraging the reader to experiment with makeup, and not just with colors, but also with the way you apply it, location, tools, and more. He does a GREAT job of summarizing styles throughout the decades and gives you step-by-step instructions with color and makeup suggestions for you to replicate the looks. I especially loved the history of the "Eyebrow" (30s thin brows)and "lip" (50s full lip). I really loved the "film noir" and "hollywood bombshell" looks. AKT: I love the quote you start your documentary with. I think that is my favorite quote by Aucoin. "By showing someone else their beauty, you see the beauty in yourself."

TB: So true! The people that have the thing you want - and you know what they want from you. And you supply that somehow and you're in. I've kept it through several moves, including a period of my life where all my belongings were split between the three friend's houses I was couchsurfing on. I've never completed one of the looks featured in the book. That's not what makes the book so valuable to me.

Reviews

Tiffany Bartok‬ on Kevyn Aucoin: "He could sense any fear. I know Linda Evangelista, he made her feel like 'You got this!' You know, 'I got you, you got this.' Because it's scary to be that vulnerable." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze TB: I connected to Christy Turlington's talking about how he really wanted all of it to come together - family, beauty. He could cosmetically improve his life but he wasn't ashamed of where he came from in any way. All the family was with him at all times for good and bad. We still go to all the film festivals with his siblings. That spirit is still very much there. TB: People say like, why did he have to do all these people so compulsively? I think when he did Janet, he was Janet. And when he did Tina, he was Tina. And I think in the end there was a mirror that he had to hold up to himself. You know?
