Key Ingredients: One of the best things about skin tints — and something that sets them apart from other complexion products — is that so many of them are infused with skin care ingredients. In this regard, think about what your skin loves when you’re applying your skin care products and translate that into the skin tint products you choose. For example, if you can’t live without niacinamide, then go for a skin tint that includes it. If hyaluronic acid serums are a staple in your routine, seek that out in a formula. But what is a skin tint, I hear you ask? Way more lightweight than your classic foundation, a skin tint is exactly what you'd expect: a low-maintenance, barely there hint of colour and coverage that evens out skin tone but lets your natural complexion shine through. If, like me, you're used to applying base products as a way of covering up breakouts or redness, then here's a word of warning: skin tints do no such thing. But there's been something thrilling about embracing skin tints as a way to show off the bits of my skin that I do like rather than thinking of makeup as a means to camouflage. And make no mistake—the best skin tints really do leave your complexion looking great, spots and all! What We Don’t Love: With the limited shade selection, it can be tough to figure out the right undertone for your skin. Tinted moisturizer: While skin tints tend to be more liquidy, tinted moisturizers typically come out as a cream. These products aren't known to be full coverage either, but some may be buildable. If you're on the drier side or you shy away from liquidy products, you may prefer a tinted moisturizer to a skin tint as they, too, generally contain hydrating ingredients.

I must flag though, when it comes to shade range, it's worth noting that you're unlikely to find 50 shades of skin tint to choose from when you're shopping. In fact, I think Fenty Beauty has the biggest offering with 25 shades, which is half the number of shades as its usual foundation. This is mostly down to the fact that these products aren't about coverage. In fact, many skin tints blend away to basically nothing more than a dewy, fresh-faced finish, meaning that the available shades are often a lot more versatile and suit a larger breadth of skin tones than other products. That's not to say that there isn't more work that could and should be done in this arena, though, specifically when we're talking about more pigmented skin-tint options where shade range really does count. Once the temps start heating up, switching up your makeup routine to match it is key. Swap out your full-coverage foundation for one of the best skin tints or serum foundations to give your skin a breather (and maybe some added sun protection too). In the past two years, no-makeup-makeup, which emphasizes Zoom-friendly, skin-first makeup routines, has broken into the beauty zeitgeist. With that comes low-maintenance, dewy serum-like foundations and tints. We love these innovative products because they feature lightweight formulas and skin-loving ingredients like peptides and hyaluronic acid—without sacrificing coverage.

10 Best Skin Tints for a "No-Makeup" Look

However, it's so lightweight that if you want it to last all day, you might need to set it with a powder or prep with a primer. The only other downside is that it has a fragrance — so if you're not into scented formulas, that might be a dealbreaker. While it's not a one-to-one swap for a full-coverage foundation, this formula still offers more pigment than its peers, making it ideal if you have more to conceal. You can tell the difference just in the texture, which is an airy cream that's easy to blend. It's also infused with pearlescent pigments, which give skin a soft-focus, radiant finish, as well as the brand's Hyaluronan Complex. The latter harnesses a form of hyaluronic acid that's able to plump deep lines and wrinkles, giving skin a smoother appearance almost instantly. There are two ways to apply skin tint: With your brush or with your fingers. The difference in application depends on how much coverage you’re looking for. If you’re looking for no-makeup makeup, the warmth of your fingers will go a long way. “I always use my fingers because I want to really blend the product into my skin for a very seamless, second-skin look,” says Tiller. Just massage it in the same way you would a face serum or oil. This new tinted serum is a favorite of Soleimani’s for all the right reasons. “At the moment I’m loving the Trinny London BFF De Stress Tinted Serum because when I wear it, it feels like I don’t have anything on — it truly feels like a second skin,” she says. “I’m such a skin care lover, and I like my skin to shine through and this product just gives a little bit of a blur and then I just add a little concealer where it is needed.”While Soleimani notes that she prefers to use her fingers when it comes to the application of skin tints, she recommends the brand’s Complexion T-Brush for those who prefer tools. “It’s a perfectly dense and super soft brush that helps buff and blend for a seamless complexion,” she says Ginger King is a cosmetic chemist and the founder of FanLoveBeauty, a 100% natural and vegan beauty brand with a mission to inspire confidence through natural and clean beauty.

What We Love: It’s one of the few skin tints to offer medium to full coverage without adding weight.Coverage: The whole point of a skin tint is that it’s not a full-coverage foundation. Most formulas will deliver a sheer or lightweight coverage. “There’s a lot more flexibility with skin tints because they are so sheer,” says Soleimani. “Many brands have services that can help match your skin like Trinny London’s Match2Me which is an online quiz that finds the perfect shades.” However, if you do want something with a little extra, look for either a medium-coverage skin tint or one that is buildable so that you can easily tailor it to your needs.

Saie made waves when it debuted this skin tint, which is so good that one InStyle writer counts on it for her everyday look. “I put it on and still looked like me, just a little bit better,” she says. The pros agree with her take, too. “It also has a beautiful, skin-like finish — and it’s also clean,” says celebrity makeup artist Monika Blunder, who counts Gemma Chan and Amanda Seyfried among her clients and founded her own makeup line. “It’s one I feel good about wearing every day, and it doesn’t settle into fine lines or wrinkles.” When you’re looking for skin tints, keep your skin type in mind. Dry skin? Look for formulas with added oils like avocado oil and hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, non-comedogenic options are best, because they won’t clog your pores. You might also want added clearing ingredients like niacinamide. Choosing a lightweight skin tint that has added SPF (30+, please!) is also an excellent idea for the spring and summer months. When I tried Hourglass Veil Skin Tint, I was pleasantly surprised at how well its hydration claims held up. Meadowfoam seed oil helps to fortify the skin’s barrier while squalane prevents moisture loss and a rambutan blend boots moisture levels over time. The lightweight feel and radiant finish makes this TikTok-famous beauty product one of the best skin tints for combination skin. Because of that dewy finish, I wouldn’t recommend this to users with overly oily skin — but a little setting powder can help tamp down excess shine for a really nice, natural look for those who would want to give it a try. You agree to indemnify and hold Space NK (and its officers, directors, agents, subsidiaries, joint ventures, employees and third-party service providers, including but not limited to Bazaarvoice, Inc.), harmless from all claims, demands, and damages (actual and consequential) of every kind and nature, known and unknown including reasonable attorneys' fees, arising out of a breach of your representations and warranties set forth above, or your violation of any law or the rights of a third party. And many formulas now contain broad-spectrum sunscreen, making it “one less thing to think about,” says Tiller. Between the sun protection and the hydration, many skin tints can now replace multiple steps in your beauty routine, making them the ultimate one-and-done formula.verifyErrors }}{{ message }}{{ /verifyErrors }}{{ And with the National Eczema Association's Seal of Acceptance, you can trust that it’s safe for sensitive skin types, too. Whether the formula can be layered is another factor to consider; this means that applying more will increase the amount of coverage. “I prefer my tint to be very light in coverage — bonus points if it’s buildable,” says Blunder. Marc Reagan is one of our favorite kinds of multihyphenates: a professional makeup artist with more than 18 years of experience painting the world’s most beautiful faces, and currently the executive director, global artistry and consumer experience at Bobbi Brown.

In the summer, when you want to apply fewer products, a really hydrating tinted moisturiser can replace your traditional moisturiser so you’re not layering too many steps. So your routine would look like this: cleanser, serum, SPF and then tinted moisturiser. Because despite having skincare benefits, this still sits firmly in your makeup bag and therefore should always be applied over your SPF. Romy Soleimani is a New York-based makeup artist and bona fide skin care lover. She’s well-known for techniques that achieve fresh, glowing second skin, as well as for her expert use of color. Not only has she worked with A-list clientele including Tracee Ellis Ross, Alicia Keys, and Reese Witherspoon, she’s also contributed her talents to editorials in publications like Vogue, Harper’s BAZAAR, and ELLE. Since skin tints are inherently lightweight (or supposed to be), their texture doesn’t vary too much. You’ll either find cream-like formulas or those with the slip and fast-absorbing properties of face serum.

It's also not a product known for longevity, so eventually the glow will fade as the day goes on. But that also brings us to the lit-from-within glow, which is hard to match from your average skin tint, and one of the reasons Tiller is a fan. that is, or may reasonably be considered to be submitted in extreme volumes and as such be deemed as ‘spam’; Skin tints can be a hard sell for those with acne-prone skin since they don't often provide enough coverage to handle both active breakouts and acne scars, but we're happy to say that's not the case here. While it's still more sheer than your average foundation, its light-to-medium coverage can be layered on to hide dark spots and minimize the appearance of large or clogged pores — all without sacrificing the natural finish or feeling cakey. Let's start with the downsides: This delivers light coverage only, and even if you think you could build it to medium coverage, you'd be wrong. (However, you can layer it underneath foundation.) They also lean towards the more natural side of the makeup spectrum, which is what I prefer on a day-to-day basis—like an ever-so-slightly elevated version of myself. There are a lot of tinted SPFs available now, but if you’re specifically looking for a hint of coverage but a lot of hydration, a tinted moisturiser is your best option. BB creams, while very similar, are a little heavier in coverage, more like a foundation with a bit of hydration. And CC creams are even close to foundations on the coverage spectrum and mainly offer colour-correction benefits.
