About this deal

If the Trials and the opponents don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for will if he discovers what Paedyn really is . . . completely Ordinary. This was a good decent book. it was just that I’ve seen it all before? I mean it’s really a strong debut with a solid storyline and interesting characters and world building. However, it’s the kind of fantasy book where you could guess every single thing that’s going to happen in a typical YA fantasy book. It didn’t add anything if you get what I mean. This sparkling edition includes a special case stamping, bonus content, and a teaser to book two in this heart-pounding series!

Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya . . . The exceptional. The Elites . The Elites have possessed powers for decades, gifted to them by the Plague , while those born Ordinary are just that, banished from the kingdom and shunned from society.Surviving in the slums as an Ordinary is no simple task, and Paedyn knows this better than most. Having been trained by her father to be keenly observant since she was a child, Paedyn poses as a Psychic in the crowded city, blending in with the Elites as best she can to stay alive and out of trouble...easier said than done.

Powerless is set in the kingdom of Ilya, where there are Elites and Ordinaries- the Elites possess incredible powers and seek to get rid of the Ordinaries, as they believe them to corrupt society. Paedyn Gray is an Ordinary posing as an Elite to prevent her being hunted by the Elites. When she meets Kai Azer, one of Ilya's princes, sparks fly- and then they both end up in the Purging Trials, a brutal competition where the most talented Elites display their powers. But without a power, Paedyn must fight to survive the trials- and protect her heart from Kai, who she knows she shouldn't fall for... Her saying 'Gonna stab you in the heart' was literally the 288262th time. She's Vicious little thing as he called her. (reminded me of Violet) In a time of typewriters and steam engines, Iris Winnow awaits word from her older brother, who has enlisted on the side of Enva the Skyward goddess. Alcohol abuse led to her mother’s losing her job, and Iris has dropped out of school and found work utilizing her writing skills at the Oath Gazette. Hiding the stress of her home issues behind a brave face, Iris competes for valuable assignments that may one day earn her the coveted columnist position. Her rival for the job is handsome and wealthy Roman Kitt, whose prose entrances her so much she avoids reading his articles. At home, she writes cathartic letters to her brother, never posting them but instead placing them in her wardrobe, where they vanish overnight. One day Iris receives a reply, which, along with other events, pushes her to make dramatic life decisions. Magic plays a quiet role in this story, and readers may for a time forget there is anything supernatural going on. This is more of a wartime tale of broken families, inspired youths, and higher powers using people as pawns. It flirts with clichéd tropes but also takes some startling turns. Main characters are assumed White; same-sex marriages and gender equality at the warfront appear to be the norm in this world. A stabbing pain in my side has my drooping eyes flying open, drowsiness forgotten. The jagged stone jutting up from the alley floor has me groggily grumbling, “Mark my words, I’m going to steal a cot one day.”

Table of Contents

I really enjoyed the story and characters but I know if I hadn’t read The Hunger Games I would have loved it so much more. There are so many elements which are a direct parallel to THG that it started to become a bit predictable. For example the contestants are made to gain the Ilyan peoples votes through a public interview (where Paedyn doesn’t say the script she’s meant to follow), royal balls (where of course Paedyn goes against tradition and dresses to stand out) and of course the trails themselves which despite knowing there can be only one winner they form alliances. I'd never thought about what my favorite color was before because I hadn't seen one that was worthy of the title. Until now, that is. How very gentlemanly of you, but that coat is not nearly big enough to save my dress from getting dirty.”

While the plot was fun overall, i do thiShe blows a strand of hair from her eyes in annoyance. "I feel like I don't know many things about you, so I figured I'd start with the basics." An amused sigh. "I'm letting you off the hook with an easy question so don't disappoint. What is your favorite color?" i was hooked from the beginning to the end. the plot was so entertaining and even though i haven’t seen hunger games, i need to watch it after seeing many people compare this book to the movie ( series? idk really) The thing about building a book around tropes is that tropes are not meant to be the foundation of a book. Tropes are simply things that should come natural to the characters, things that enrich the reading process. A book based on tropes is a book with weak planning. there is also a quasi (ish) love triangle?? like kind of, but not, but really feels that way sometimes? but i also could see it not going that way? it's going to potentially provide much conflict next book. Even now, decades later, tales of the bodies that scattered the sand under the scalding sun are casually passed around campfires, scary stories whispered among children.
