With the plethora of available stabilization kits in the market, DJI has done an exceptional job of setting the Ronin-S apart through clever engineering and, most importantly, heightened toolsets at a similar price point to many other, far simpler stabilization kits. More advanced movements will require a bit of time to master the programming, but can result in great looking shots. For those who are novices to gimbals and stabilization systems, DJI has done a really great job in balancing the complexity of the device with simplified, ready to go, out of the box operations. What we like: In General, you can choose between handheld and car mount, change the user profile and pause the motors. DJI Ronin-S remains a powerful professional-level camera gimbal, but with incredible upgrades like carbon fiber construction, a built-in touchscreen, and added stabilization technologies such as the Titan Stabilization Algorithm and SuperSmooth, DJI RS 2 takes professional filmmaking to a whole new level. If you want the most advanced filmmaking solution for camera stabilizers in this size and price category, DJI RS 2 is an unbeatable choice. Please Note - Do not power on the Ronin-S until the camera is mounted and balanced. This may cause damage to the motors. Ronin-S and Ronin-SC both have a portable, detachable design, which makes them very convenient to transport.
If you are using a DSLR camera for your projects and have more extensive lens setups and more ambitious shooting environments, the Ronin-S is an excellent choice for you. Ronin-S is a must-have handheld gimbal for event filmmakers, content makers, and DSLR camera owners. Due to its small size and impressive performance, the Ronin-S should appeal to a variety of users ranging from filmmakers to wedding videographers. Currently, Panasonic offers the greatest levels of compatibility with their GH5 and GH5S models working with all aspects of the Ronin-S. However, different cameras have varying levels of connection. The final stage we recommend in setting up your Ronin-S is to complete an auto tune with your gimbal. This can be done through the Ronin app or on the gimbal.

We mounted a Panasonic GH5S for the purposes of this review – and, right now, this camera and the original GH5 are the most closely compatible with the Ronin-S. The folded mini-tripod provides a boom-like extension for overhead shots, low-to-the-ground shots, and generally provides a better handhold than the handle alone. I also found the mini tripod could be used to prevent fatigue by using it as a belt rest. That’s good, because at 1.9kg (4.1lbs), the Ronin-S looks lightweight on paper, but adding any weight at all to a camera setup increases physical stress for even the most experienced gimbal operators. It's much less of a workout than trying to manhandle the larger Ronin-M for any length of time, though. DJI are currently in the process of speaking to camera manufacturers about integration, so we should see further development.
The Ronin-S supports a range of DSLR and mirrorless cameras from a number of manufacturers. These include Nikon, Canon, Panasonic and more. This menu allows you to complete the tuning function we discussed above as well as set specific motor parameter. As you can see in the above image, the Ronin-S has an elevated platform for your DSLR and mirrorless camera, meaning, unlike some similar gimbals, the motors won't come into the frame in use. Additionally, larger payloads are also compatible without issue.

Smoothing - When the value is increased, the Ronin-S will slow down for a smooth shot. When at 0, the Ronin-S will abruptly stop. Force Pro - This control system synchronises with a gimbal to mimic the smallest movements used to capture minute detail. This is a key aspect to consider when deciding which gimbal is right for you. While Ronin-S can be used with an extensive selection of DSLR and mirrorless cameras, Ronin-SC is specifically designed for mirrorless cameras that weigh up to 2 kg. It’s a little on the heavy side and isn’t (yet) fully compatible with enough cameras, which does make it something of a niche buy. It certainly isn’t a product that will hugely benefit everyone who occasionally uses their system camera for video, but enthusiasts will adore it – and rightly so. Verdict Broadly speaking, balancing a camera on the Ronin-S is similar to most other gimbals, though it handles some situations particularly well.
The front of the gimbal includes the trigger and USB charging port; the follow focus knob can be mounted on either side or removed completely. The base of the gimbal connects to the battery with a very solid lever. Added photo capture, video recording, autofocus, and focus pull support for Nikon Z6 cameras with supported Nikkor lenses. To use autofocus on the Nikon Z6, press down halfway on the gimbal’s camera control button. The Ronin-S features a built-in 2400 mAh battery within its grip. The battery is capable of powering the Ronin for up to 12 hours if properly utilised.
