About this deal

According to this optional scoring scheme, players have the same potential number of points regardless of their bids in each round. For each card, they can potentially earn 10 points. If they bid accurately, they will earn all the points they can. Each Mermaid captured with a Pirate card is worth 20 bonus points. Each Pirate captured with the Skull King earns 30 bonus points. Capturing the Skull King with a Mermaid earns 40 bonus points. WINNING

A: Yes. Remaining players play the established suit if they have it, or a special card if they choose. Again, as a reminder: Special cards can be played at any time! Even if it is possible to follow suit! Notes:In addition, players may choose to add this twist to their scoring. After simultaneously revealing bids, players will then simultaneously reveal if they’re going to score with Cannonball (closed fist) or Grapeshot (open hand). Players don’t look at their cards, but instead hold them out so everyone else can see each other’s cards before bidding.

Displaying the bids this way saves a bit of time after everyone bids because each player adjusts their own cards simultaneously and they don’t have to wait for one person to deal out the number cards after each bid and then recollect them at the end of each round. For starters, the artwork on the cards has been slightly updated. While the artwork is nice and crisp, there really are just slight differences in the visual elements on the cards – the numbers, the rings around the numbers, etc. You can see the difference in a number of photos included in this review (with the old on the left and new on the right). Slight differences in the old vs. the new card artwork. Bid Cards After ten rounds, the player with the highest score becomes the Captain of the Seven Seas and wins the whole game. Rascal Type of Scoring We got caught up in the fun of the game and played it a ton of times over the following days on the cruise. We even played it in the hotel room after the cruise. And we’ve continued to play regularly since then (see above with mom being the instigator). The included score pad looks confusing at first, but it’s actually really handy once you get rolling. These cards are higher than all the cards of a suit (irrespective of the suit or value) and the Mermaid.

The new version of Skull King also throws in rules for playing with just 2 players. (Which is great for mom and dad now that the kids are out of the nest.) You will also get some blank cards with the set for creating your unique cards and characters or replacing any lost cards. Skull King Scoring Our one and only visit to Roatan and our first play of Skull King, with the Rascal of Roatan, just happened to be on the very same day!

Each player receives two bid cards (0 – 4 and 5 – 9; we’ll get to that shortly) and two player’s aid cards (with practical hints on scoring/features of the card). Scores are cumulative with the player who plays the best over ten rounds crowned the winner. Drunken Sailor (s) When playing with just 2 players, a third hand is dealt to Greybeard’s Ghost (his hand of cards remaining facedown). He doesn’t bid, nor does he score any points.

I hope this has helped you to learn the rules and how Skull King plays. Obviously I would always recommend people use the official rule book to learn the rules in depth but this blog should give you a really good flavour of how the game flows. Starting with the person to the left of the dealer, each player plays a card from their hand. The first card played that is one of the 4 suits determines the color that the other players must use. However, if a player doesn’t have a card of that suit in their hand, they can choose to play a card of another suit. So yes, the game is a hit with our family for the game play itself. But it also has a special place in our collective memory.

Scoring

In the original, a mermaid capturing the Skull King granted 50 bonus points. But this new version puts those bonus points at 40. And when a pirate captures a mermaid, the player gets 20 bonus points. The reference cards are nice for those that need reminders. The number of cards changes from one hand to the next. In the first hand each player receives only 1 card, in the second 2 cards etc. until in the tenth and last hand each player is dealt 10 cards. Throughout the game, as many rounds are played as the players are holding cards in their hands. Embark on a 3rd person action-adventure quest to avenge the death of your parents at the hands of the ultimate alpha predator: Gaw. Conquer waves of primal beasts and defeat the minions of your arch-nemesis on your way to becoming the rightful King of Skull Island. Traverse the mysterious island and uncover lore and all the secrets the island has to offer as you encounter swamps, waterfalls, jungle, and skullite-filled caves that give the island’s flora and fauna its power A: You lose the points wagered. You must still be exactly right to earn a bonus from a wager with the Rascal. This remains the same when using cannonball.
