About this deal

Its unpretentious, surrealistic humor had broad appeal and could be enjoyed on multiple levels. At times, it was silly and sweet and designed simply to spread smiles. Gary Larson was born and raised in Tacoma, Washington. His parents were Vern, a car salesman, and Doris, a secretary. He attended Curtis High School before attending Washington State University and graduated in 1972 with a degree in communications. In 1987, Larson married Toni Carmichael, an archaeologist.

Music has also been an important part of Larson’s life. He started playing the guitar at an early age, moved to the banjo for a few years, and then ultimately returned to the guitar. Since retiring from daily newspaper syndication, Larson has focused his creative efforts on the guitar and his passion for jazz. But these are minor quibbles. If you're at all a fan of "The Far Side", and have the money and the room, you'll want these books. They're great for endless hours of entertainment. I had this on my wishlist forever, waiting for it to fall into my cheapness zone. Fortunately, my wife bought it for me sometime after the collapse of society. It may have been an effort to stave off cabin fever for another week or two or perhaps a Father's Day gift. Gary Larson was born August 14, 1950, in Tacoma, Washington. Always drawn to nature, he and his older brother spent much of their youth exploring the woods and swamps of the Pacific Northwest, and the tidelands and waters of Puget Sound.Anyway, The Far Side is one of those legendary comic strips. I was a little young for the humor during its initial run so I had an ambition to reread it. I'm sure Gary Larson never intended for anyone to read four and a half years of his strip in less than 24 hours but this was a great read. urn:lcp:completefarside0001lars:epub:f3048e85-6ee7-4ff3-8b68-cc645fe33e25 Foldoutcount 0 Grant_report Arcadia #4117 Identifier completefarside0001lars Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t25b98636 Invoice 1853 Isbn 0740721135 As for his inspiration, Larson often cites his family’s “morbid sense of humor” growing up and how his older brother loved to scare him whenever he got the chance. He was also once quoted as saying, “You know those little snow globes that you shake up? I always thought my brain was sort of like that. You know, where you just give it a shake and watch what comes out and shake it again.” He attributes much of his success to the caffeine in the coffee he drinks daily. Larson’s genius knew no sacred cows, and he probed and needled at just about everything. Whether providing insight into the meaning of life, by depicting God as an over adventuress chef... And sometimes, he was just a lunatic jokester casting a bizarre-filtered folk wisdom or pop philosophy in a comedic, fell good light...

During its 14-year run, The Far Side ® was syndicated internationally to over 1,900 daily newspapers. It spawned 23 books and has been translated into 17 different languages. Interesting note: the two-volume microprint dictionary comes in its own display case, complete with magnifying glass, and turns out to be EXACTLY the same height and depth as "The Complete Far Side". So they look really nice together.

During its 14-year run, The Far Side was syndicated internationally to over 1,900 daily newspapers. It spawned 22 books and has been translated into a total of 17 different languages. While I consumed it in a way far faster than nature and Gary Larson intended, The Complete Far Side - Book One was an amusing read. Bring on the next four year chunk! Four out of five cows. And I still had to figure out where to put them. They won't fit on any of my bookshelves. They're much too big for the coffee table. Under my bed? The monsters would eat them, and the crunching would keep me awake. Finally I hit upon the ideal solution: I slung them onto my dresser, between my "Compact Oxford Dictionary" and the filing cabinet. and when it burst on the scene like a talking, cow-shaped comet in 1980, the strip was like nothing the newspaper funnies had ever seen.
