Be mindful and discrete, but don't overthink it. If in doubt try train stations or shopping streets, where people are busy with their own tasks and often too distracted to notice you drawing them. If you win (someone has to win every competition so may as well be you) with your prior consent your name, location, images and video where applicable of you and your prize will be used by Urban Draw in marketing materials to promote the competition. This later evolved into a blog ( urbansketchers.org) where Gabriel invited artists to share their sketches and ‘reports’ from around the world to allow others to “see the world, one drawing at a time” – the Urban Sketchers motto.

I have an entire post on some of my favourite urban sketchers, they are some of the most prominent and well-known sketchers involved in the urban sketching movement – and for good reason. Their work is incredible and hugely inspiring. Many of them have taught workshops at the Urban Sketchers Symposium, teach workshops around the world and have courses available online. Exploring Different Styles of Urban Sketching Once you have practised sketching at home and you feel ready, get outside and start sketching from life…this is where the magic lies! Get Outside!

Thumbnail sketching is a great habit to get into and will save you a lot of time and hassle down the road if you intend to sketch a scene for an hour or more. There are various ways in which writing on an urban sketch of buildings and architecture can complete the information given by the drawing itself. First it can help writing up expectations (before) and reflections (after) the sketching takes place. This could be to point out the changes between them and highlight any surprises noticed whilst drawing.

STILL UNDECIDED?

For those who are beginner artists excited at the prospect of urban sketching but still needing to learn the art of drawing and painting, practising the basic concepts and techniques at home is a great way to step towards sketching on location. As noted above, writing can be part of the drawing process. As such, if desired, space can be left blank or set aside for writing during the sketching experience or to be completed afterwards. Sometimes it pays to give one’s thoughts some time before putting them down, allowing the memory to settle a bit before remembering it. This way writing is also a little creative and not too analytical. It loses its stiff, factual nature and becomes part of our creativity. The decisions of Urban Draw regarding all competition matters, whether the main, second or third prize competition , is final and binding. Urban Draw will not enter into correspondence regarding these matters. Most of our competitions have second and third place prizes. This will also be drawn live, in the same manner as the main prize. The second and third place draws will take place straight after the main draw. The event takes place in different cities around the world each year. The very first symposium was in 2010 and was hosted in Portland, Oregon, USA.
