Mindfulness also allows us to become more aware of the stream of thoughts and feelings that we experience, and to see how we can become entangled in that stream in ways that are not helpful. Having identified our values, we know where we want to go in life, the direction we want to progress towards. We might set goals along the way. In addition to formal meditation, you can also cultivate mindfulness informally by focusing your attention on your moment-to-moment sensations during everyday activities. This is done by single-tasking—doing one thing at a time and giving it your full attention. As you floss your teeth, pet the dog, or eat an apple, slow down the process and be fully present as it unfolds and involves all of your senses. Mindfulness exercises

We learn to make room for painful feelings, thoughts, and sensations - allowing them to be there, coming and going without us struggling against them. Knowing our values will help us decide how to react to stress and distress. In spite of how we feel, we can still move in the direction and service of our values. It might be useful to remember that mindfulness isn't about making these thoughts go away, but rather about seeing them as mental events that come and go. This can be very hard at first, but with gentle persistence it is possible. Gently redirect. If your mind wanders into planning, daydreaming, or criticism, notice where it has gone and gently redirect it to sensations in the present.
