About this deal

We are upgrading the rules for Ashes as well as about 30% of the existing card pool. To get the new rulebook and all of the revised cards, you’ll need to get the Ashes Reborn 1.5 upgrade kit, which contains over 350 revised cards. The best way to be among the first players to get the upgrade kit is to join our subscription program through Team Covenant. You can find all of the details about the subscription program HERE. Swap Channel Magic in for: Nobody’s gonna be writing any loving raccoon poetry about Admonisher any time soon, but it’s more important to get rid of Law of Grace, which just doesn’t do enough in RR to keep.

Swap Channel Magic in for: Some choices here. Resummon is playable, but Noah himself isn’t really on the list of people who can maximize it. It does let you, functionally, remove an exhaustion token, and that can be worth 2 dice in some circumstances. Meanwhile, Sleight of Hand is usually just as bad here as it is in PVP, and Bound Soul is also dubious value. Trust your gut. None of those three cards are gonna win the game for you, and Noah is going to be best with all 3 copies of Channel. Just a matter of what you take out. In general, the best way to fight the Chimera is to take out Aspects as consistently as you can. Taking advantage of Blood and getting it as often as you can is almost non-negotiable. It’s possible to win with no Aspect kills, but those strategies are often highly specific. In general, you should be punching those Aspects! So you’re interested in playing Ashes Reborn: Rise of the Phoenixborn, but feeling nervous because it seems daunting? Never fear! Ashes is one of those great games that’s easy to learn but hard to master, and although becoming an excellent player is mainly a matter of experience, I can at least provide some general pointers so that you have a better idea about why experienced players make the choices they do. There were speculations about a 7th type of die, Time, with a turtle logo. But PHG has confirmed that Fiona and James marks the end of Ashes line.

Final Score: 3.5 Stars – Ashes is the most CCG-like of the LCGs I’ve played. Rewards investment in lots of expansions and exploring the card pool to make cool, powerful things happen. We hope all Ashes players find joy in playing Red Rains with other Ashes fans and in sharing Ashes with new players through this approachable, cooperative experience. This game mode has been a large endeavor desiring to explore more of what Ashes Reborn has to offer. Plaid Hat Games is terribly excited to see the community’s response to it. The game can handle up to four players, but there are very few cards that take advantage of having more than one opponent, and particularly with just the core box available you may find yourself running short of playable combinations. Components

For cards that aren’t Ready Spells, you can include one, two, or three copies as you like. Here’s what those numbers mean:Be careful with Mist Typhoon and One Hundred Blades. As much as you want to clear the board, you also do not want to give your opponent wounds onto a Living Doll or too many opportunities to use Screams of the Departed. If possible, it’s best to play your board-clearing spells near the end of the round, especially if Jessa is out of dice and can’t use Screams. If you’re regularly running four player drafts out of your collection, you might want extras, I guess. Or if you just really like dice. Playing the game Despite the ease of getting started with Ashes, as you play it more and more, you will learn the best individual play style of each Phoenixborn. Due to this, a veteran player will thrash a newbie, so choose your gaming group wisely. On the box, Ashes is listed as a 2-4 player game, however it is best enjoyed at 2 players. If you have 4 players – do a tournament as this will last about as long as a 4 player all v all and will be much more engaging. Theme Maeoni can have a rough start, both to the campaign and to each individual game within it. Silver Snake is an engine that takes time to come online, and in the meantime, having only Gilders to keep you safe can and will have the Chimera barreling over you. It’s good then, that surviving the initial rounds rewards you with nothing short of the most broken unit in Red Rains. That dang Silver Snake, especially in cooperative, will just win you the game outright if given enough time and protection. Play carefully. Consume. Win handily.

Swap Channel Magic in for: Disengage isn’t great in PVP and it’s not substantially improved here, especially considering how dubious exhaustion is in RR. It buys you a main action, but so does Channel Magic, which also gives you crucial dice fixing and healing. Ditch it. What you need is the revised version of Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn. It has everything you’ll need to play the new edition of Ashes. The new version of Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn will be available at hobby game retailers in November 2020. While Ashes offers an innovative way to play a CCG, as a stand-alone product this set doesn’t quite deliver on the game’s true potential. Definitely worth a look if you and a fellow card game enthusiast are after something vibrant and thought provoking. I agree: playing with strangers is scary. But Ashes is one of the most uniquely friendly communities I’ve ever participated in. I have literally never had a bad experience playing this game, even when I’m getting stomped into the ground. It’s honestly a little weird.Art in the core set is mostly by Fernanda Suarez, and it gives the game an energetic and colourful style. These aren’t grim fantasy post-apocalyptic warriors: they’re having fun with their magic, and one feels they might even have lives away from the battlefield. (And this isn’t a game I’m ashamed to play with my female or non-white friends.) Editions & Expansions
