a b c Crapo, Trish (2017). "Difficult choices". 34 (3). The Women's Review of Books: 20–22. {{ cite journal}}: Cite journal requires |journal= ( help) Beautifully written in the graceful, lilting prose that dominated Our Lady of the Nile.” – Eileen Battersby, Irish Times(Best Books of 2016) I can’t give this memoir less than five stars, although it is a disturbing book, that caused my reactions to sway between sadness and anger.

De Verges J, Nehring V. A critical look at proximate causes of social insect senescence: damage accumulation or hyperfunction? Curr Opin Insect Sci. 2016; 16:69–75. doi: 10.1016/j.cois.2016.05.003. [ PubMed] [ CrossRef] [ Google Scholar] This novel feels true. It happens in my city but it is not of my culture, and yet the author put me right in there, experiencing the struggle to survive. I felt the empty belly of having no food, no money and nowhere to turn when you are hungry and cold. I felt the total alienation from the mainstream, the hierarchy within the immigrant community, the weight of emotional baggage that an immigrant may bring with him. Canada, land of welcoming arms and opportunity? Oh, yeah? Maybe if you come with money and position. They were in the Cabinet room. Halfway down the long table by the largest chair was a tray of coffee, which the prime minister approached with such avidity that over the last few steps he broke into a run. He hoped to arrive ahead of his companion and snatch a moment with the sugar bowl. But by the time he was lowering himself into the chair, with minimal decorum, his coffee was being poured. There was no sugar on the tray. Not even milk. But in the grey shadow cast by his saucer, visible only to him, was a dying bluebottle. Every few seconds its wings trembled. With some effort, Jim wrenched his gaze away while he listened. He was beginning to think he might sneeze. Mukasonga’s] haunting, urgent personal history of the Rwandan genocide (translated by Jordan Stump) will deeply shade your map.” — New York Times Book Review Despite all the cynicism, surreal imagery, and nihilistic tone (which many have found offputting), the ultimate sense conveyed by the protagonist is a profound sense of loneliness. As he laments to his psychiatrist:

Barbara Hoffert of Library Journal stated that the book "is related with brave, sobering, steely-eyed calm." [5] Herranz N, Gil J. Mechanisms and functions of cellular senescence. ACS Chem Neurosci 12:1469–1471 His unmanageable head, he discovered, could rotate through 180 degrees with little effort. He turned it now to one side. It was a small attic bedroom, unpleasantly lit by the morning sun, for the curtains had not been drawn. There was a telephone at his bedside, no, two telephones. His constricted gaze travelled across the carpet to settle on the skirting board and the narrow gap along its lower edge. I might have squeezed under there out of the morning light, he thought sadly. I could have been happy. Across the room there was a sofa and by it, on a low table, a cut-glass tumbler and an empty bottle of scotch. Laid out over an armchair was a suit and a laundered, folded shirt. On a larger table near the window were two box files, one sitting on top of the other, both coloured red.If reading isn’t so much your thing, there’s a movie to get a sense of what happened.: Hotel Rwanda (2004) where a hotel manager houses over a thousand Tutsi refugees during their struggle against the Hutu militia in Rwanda. the book starts with a nightmare a mob chases after the Author with a machetes trying to catching her and after she woke up she goes to the main room which contain box within it stuffs from her home which does not exist anymore and a pictures whose life cut shorts by irrational hate and prejudices of her community. Only so many Tutsis were allowed further education. Scholastique made it into Lycee Notre-Dame-de- Citeaux, and eventually out of the country. Wounded, Jeanne falls to the ground. Her belly is sliced open. The fetus is ripped out. They beat her with the fetus. Nana [her youngest child] is at her side. The killers go on their way, leaving Nana there with her. And then someone, and I will never know who that someone is, asks a dying Jeanne, as she lies in a pool of her own blood, what he can do for her. ‘You can’t do anything for me, but if you can do something, take Nana with you.”

The majority of this book is presented as a spare, precise sequence of events following the author’s childhood and education. I was actually reminded here of Annie Ernaux’s “The Years”, but Mukasonga’s writing is by no means derivative of hers. While the author doesn’t present herself as intelligent or gifted, she unexpectedly passes the tests required to get her into an elite school in Rwanda, and she excels in education as she moves into social work. This ultimately is what saves her life, and forces her to account for the 37 members of her family who would not survive. The second half of this book finds her returning to her past, no longer with fear of being branded as an ethnic minority. In this space, she goes to name those that died and whose bodies will never be found.A bit of local glee along the way. But longer term, no catharsis, only bafflement and gloom and wonder at the state we’re in. what is good in the introduction of the book is humanizing and personalizing the victims and what i mean by this it is different when i say a million Tutsis has dies in genocide or sos and so has died, i don't know about other human beings but it feels to me they are more Humane and alive when you mention their names and talk about their histories

He's an immigrant, albiet a seven-year resident in Montreal, who is having problems adjusting. He seems to expect the world owes him a living, and a mighty fine one at that.

I hate it. It's about all of the clichés that frame immigrants : messed up, psychotic, sex-addicts, egocentric, psychopaths, thiefs, hallucinating drunkies, drug addicts, filthy, leeches,... He began to walk round the long table towards the door. He was coming to feel some pleasure in his stride and a new sense of control. Improbable as it had seemed, it was possible to feel stable on only two feet. It hardly bothered him to be so far off the ground. And he was glad now not to have eaten a bluebottle in another man’s presence. It might not have gone down well.
