The Frieling French Press is the ideal blend of style and function. Its highly polished stainless steel exterior creates a pretty presentation in the kitchen, while the full-length handle is easy to lift and pour. Plus, it brews bold coffee. It was one of the best batches we tried from more than 20 French presses. There was a moderate amount of sediment, but it's on par with most French presses. Most of the French presses in our lineup hover around the same price and are made from similar materials. There are some exceptions, however, and more expensive presses exhibit unique designs, patented filtration systems, or are built to withstand more wear and tear. The Poliviar, Mueller Double Insulated, Espro P3, and Secura are all about the same price. It might have been hard to tell the difference if not for some of our differentiating tests. The Secura is pretty basic but delivered excellent results in all our tests, making it a high-value choice.
If you add water to the Fellow Clara at a temperature of 205F and leave it to brew for four minutes, it can keep the coffee hot during the brewing process. You can expect the coffee in the cup to be around 180F. Another noteworthy aspect of using it is that the capacity is smaller than you might suspect. While the Clara is relatively large, the capacity of the Fellow French press really maxes out at 3-4 cups. This is because the vacuum-sealed walls mean the interior is significantly smaller than the exterior. So perfectly fine size if you are brewing for 1-4 people, but can’t brew the sort of capacities available with some other French Presses. The Poliviar Double Wall is the fanciest-looking competitor in our lineup. The insulated carafe is available in multiple colors to match your preference, and the teak wood handles will make it stand out and have your friends asking where you got such an elegant-looking piece. Just don't tell them that it didn't cost you very much! Or do, because spreading the love of a good deal makes the world go round. This press also did well throughout our more serious tests. It kept our coffee warm longer than average, has decent filtration, is easy to use, and is made of quality materials. Fellow thought of (almost) everything. For example, in most French presses, you need to line up the lid in a certain way to pour out the coffee. Clara French press has an all-directional pour lid with holes all around, so you don’t need to align a small opening with the spout.
Most French presses have a glass carafe, but they don’t retain heat that well, making this a significant advantage of the Clara, particularly because you typically need to allow around four minutes of brewing time for the French press. It's not just the design that we love, though. The brewing performance makes the press worth purchasing, too. There were some inconsistencies in the batches we made, but overall the flavor is strong, balanced, and everything you could want out of a French press. OXO Brew GroundsLifter French Press: We initially thought this French press—which features an item called the GroundsLifter, a ladle to scoop out coffee grounds—would help produce a cup of coffee with minimal grit, but its glass build didn’t extract coffee well and produced one of the thinnest cups of coffee we tried. For this review, we tested 18 French press coffee makers. After Lab testing over 20 French presses, our all-around favorite is the Espro Everyday P3. Its price is on par with the typical 32-ounce French press (that's the only size the P3 comes in), yet we found the coffee it brews to be tastier and to contain less sediment than nearly every competitor. This is partially due to Espro's patented double filter system; instead of a single filter to plunge coffee grounds, the P3 uses two extra-fine mesh filters to ensure a smoother cup of coffee. Still, do those features make it worth the extra money compared to other devices? Not really. If you like the sleek and sophisticated design, it’s probably worth it, but if the aesthetic is not that important for you, we suggest opting for a less expensive French press. Yes, the Fellow Clara produces full-bodied coffee that’s above average, but it’s not three times as delicious as coffee made by other French presses. Our Verdict Fortunately, the flavor is not affected by the material that you choose. The coffee will be delicious no matter what. French presses only make a few cups of coffee at once, with capacities ranging anywhere from 12 to 51 ounces. If you intend to use a French press for an entire household, go with a larger option, roughly 8 cups and up. Just know that size and price are linked together: Larger French presses are more expensive, and smaller French presses are cheaper.
