About this deal

The legion 5 doesn’t even try to be compact and portable by any means, either. The laptop weighs 2.4 kilos in this tested configuration with the 80Wh battery, and you must also consider the massive 300W charger included with this configuration, which weighs an extra 1.15 kilos. If you need a thin-and-light full-size laptop that would be easy to lug around every day to work and school, this is not it. The Legion 5 is available in most areas of the world at the time of this article, but the prices seem to differ significantly from region to region.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 is an entry-level GPU that can push around 60 fps at 1080p with low settings. The RTX 3050 is faster than the GTX 1650 and will let you run graphically demanding games at high settings while still maintaining around 60 fps or slightly more. The RTX 3050Ti performs only about 10% better than the RTX 3050 on average; however, the RTX 3060 is much faster, giving you a 35% to 40% performance boost over the RTX 3050. The RTX 3070 is the top-end configuration and will give you roughly a 15% performance increase over the RTX 3060 on average, though it can be more in VRAM-heavy scenarios. Finally, the AMD Radeon RX 6600M is roughly equivalent to the RTX 3060; it'll perform a little better or worse depending on each game's optimization. The display is the Legion 5 Pro’s greatest strength, other than its powerful hardware. I loved how crisp images were, and every game I played looked awesome. Lenovo Legion 5 Pro review: Performance Even though it’s not a 99Whr battery, the battery life is still pretty good for a gaming laptop. The key is making sure that Hybrid mode is turned on. Finally, I’ll add that gaming on battery mode is somewhat possible here, but the CPU and GPU are limited at a 50W combined power, so the performance takes a massive toll in comparison to even the Quiet plugged-in mode. Also, don’t expect more than an hour and a bit of runtime with gaming on the battery.

Verdict - Legion 5 15 convinces with display and high performance

That aside, the fans keep active with daily use all the time and never idle on any of the profiles, regardless of the laptop runs on battery or is plugged in. That’s surely unnecessary and you will notice them in a quiet room, but they do keep at around 30-32 dB, so won’t bother you in a regular environment.

This Legion 5 has an 80Whr battery, which is a pretty decent size. I’m sure it’s to be consistent with the other Legion models, but it would have been nicer to utilize that extra space and beef it up to 99Whr.The Delta-E color accuracy score was also quite good at 0.3. (0 is perfect.) And with 116% of the sRGB color spectrum, the Legion 5 Pro has a balanced color profile. That translates well to games, which look rich and vibrant. You’ll also have more color-accurate photos and videos if you choose to edit them on this laptop. The new Legion 5 is yet another great option in this increasingly contested section of the laptop market. It’s capable of better gaming performance than both the Acer Nitro 5 and the Asus TUF Dash F15 and it also comes within striking distance of the far pricier Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 as well. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU: High-End laptop graphics card based on the Ampere GA104 chip. Available in different versions with a TDP from 80 to 125 Watt. External temperatures are fine with this laptop, both with daily use and with games. It’s unusual though that the hotspots are placed just around the arrows keys and the Enter key, but the chassis never gets uncomfortable to the touch, as even those are only in the low to mid-40s Celsius. Still, I didn’t notice the same king of hotspots on Derek’s review units, so I’m not sure if this is normal or some sort of an issue with my unit. Internally, these hotspots seem to be placed over the chipset and SSD, which do not overheat based on our HWinfo logs.

According to the spec sheet, the Legion 5 should have a 60Wh battery but the battery in my review unit was most definitely an 80Wh (5,210mAh) unit. Had it been the former, that would more easily explain the rather poor performance in our video rundown test.If you’re dead set on getting a 17” screen and like the Legion series over everything else, I’d say this is a good buy at the 3050 and 3060 price points. But if you’re interested in getting the 3070 model I have on hand, I’d caution you against buying this unless you get a decent sale. Nahimic drastically improves your gaming experience with its immersive 3D audio and engaging features for gamers. Experience crystal-clear communication with teammates. Nahimic is a new way of playing and Legion Gamers can exclusively enjoy Easy Surround, an innovative audio solution that turns any Bluetooth speaker into a surround sound system. It’s a little small though, and being on a 17” model really makes it stand out as a missed opportunity. This is yet another area that Lenovo got lazy on, probably due to cost and the fact that the 17” models aren’t popular enough to warrant more customized components. As for the SSD, my unit comes with a 1TB drive which is made by Hynix. These drives are fine and have decent speeds as far as NVMe drives go. It’s an AMD laptop so you’re limited to PCIe gen 3.0, which is what this drive is. There’s also a spare slot if you wanted to upgrade, but note that SATA drives are no longer supported in most Legion laptops. The Legion 5 Pro shows off solid results in these tests, breezing past the 4,000-point line in PCMark 10 that indicates excellent productivity for everyday apps like Word and Excel and slightly trailing its Intel-based sibling in our CPU benchmarks. It's more than powerful enough for daily duties and moderate content creation or multimedia editing. Graphics and Gaming Tests
