About this deal

A fantastic all-around pant with rad stretchy fabric that offers exceptional freedom of movement and the best breathability Sleek, sharp, two-toned teal blue, and bearing an abundance of teeth with all these zippers, it didn’t take long before my inner shark spirit animal began to surface. Offered in many colors, there’s likely a PreCip for you. For certain users, the rugged construction and bullet-proof weather protection might be just what you need The Marmot Precip Eco is a bit of an outlier in this sense, which is par for the course for Marmot, a company that prides itself on doing things a bit differently. The brand has come a long way from its humble beginnings as two college students sewing their own sleeping bags in a dorm room, and they’re now regarded as one of the best choices for rain gear money can buy.

As far as keeping the user dry, ventilation makes less of a difference in real-world applications when compared to breathability. Why? It can be challenging to utilize ventilation if it's raining. Ventilation can be worthwhile after it has stopped raining before you remove your rain gear. Most shell pant manufacturers design pants with full and 3/4 length side zippers to make them easier to put on and take off without removing your shoes. Another vital factor to consider is the longevity of the pant's water resistance and its durable water repellent (DWR) treatment. This treatment is factory-applied to the fabric's exterior and makes water bead and shed rain and snow. Even though nylon and polyester are both quite water-repellant to begin with, if they aren't treated with a DWR (or once their DWR has worn off), they will absorb moisture. The result is the exterior of the pants becomes covered with a thin but continuous film of water, which results in a heavier pant and reduced breathability. The DWR used on the Marmot PreCip Eco Full-Zips and Marmot Minimalist Pants stood out above the rest. All the models we tested beaded water well when we first bought them; however, similar to any piece of rain gear, they should be retreated to renew DWR when needed. Comfort and Mobility

Welcome to Backpackers.com.We are a small, independent team writing gear reviews and useful outdoor guides.

Our rainy day experts have been testing pants for the last 8 years with over 25 different models exposed to rain and sleet. This review covers 9 top pairs, which we've put head to head in a series of tests. We take the time to test each product in the field while hiking, biking, and exploring through all sorts of rain. Light, heavy, big drops, small drops — our expert testers rate ventilation, comfort, value, and several other key metrics. After exploring all the rainy places from Patagonia to the USA and stops in between, we offer our award winners and recommendations, unbiased and designed to help you in your quest for the best rain pant. The Columbia Rebel Roamers are the best, most protective rain pants you can buy for the price. These are durable pants with great weather resistance that we found comparable to some of the higher-end options. They're comfortable and also versatile — we used them for skiing, too. If you're on a budget or just don't want to spend a ton of money on rain pants that you might not use very often, then these versatile bad boys blow the low-priced competition out of the water. You can certainly buy nicer rain pants, but with all things considered regarding weight, compressed size, and weather resistance, these pants are a fantastic value. Marmot NanoPro lamination utilizes advance technology that balances the best in performance of breathability, waterproofness, and water repellency with excellent durability Adjustments are notably spartan, with simple pull strings on either side of the hood and hem, and velcro cinches everywhere else. That includes the depth adjustment for the hood, which while it looks laughably simple, worked just fine in the field and offered an agreeable amount of adjustment for each of our testers. The hood on the Rab Kinetic Alpine 2.0 is of special note because it features an internal elastic band designed to ride directly on the forehead and turned out to be comfortable and effective, maintaining top-notch peripheral vision.

Membranes like this one found on the Precip tend to work well for awhile, but then slowly degrade over time and lose their effectiveness. Although I adore hiking these hills the rest of the year, it’s something special to experience this unique environment once the rains hit, and having the right gear for wet conditions makes a huge difference in my ability to enjoy that experience. Yes, it’s still awesome if I’m drenched to the bone, but I find that it’s much more pleasant to stand out in the pouring rain when my core remains toasty and dry. Constructed with a super stretchy material and offering superb mobility, this is the ideal rain shell for demanding activities From there we found the fabric started to slowly wet out, and the usual cold and clamminess associated with 2.5 layer shells began to set in. We’ll give credit where credit is due here though: Despite the unpleasant sensation of “plastic on skin” the NanoPro liner did its job well, and we have yet to experience any issues with the Precip outright failing in the field. Simple yet effective, the Marmot Precip Eco has kept its fair share of budget-concious hikers dry over the years. The Precip’s DWR works surprisingly well, and fends off lighter rain for extended periods before beginning to wet out. Once the rain really starts coming down, however, the Precip is far from our favorite option. We mainly chalk this up to the previously mentioned 2.5L construction, which starts to feel cold and clammy against the skin as the outer fabric wets out. Face fabric is bonded to a PU membrane and has a very thin layer printed on the interior. Further explanation in our Guide.

Quality hood design with plenty of adjustability, and you can stow the hood away under the collar when not in use.Worn directly against the skin felt nearly as clammy as the bottom of the Boston harbor — i.e., not great. But it was quite cozy with a thermal or fleece between my skin and the interior 2.5-layer. Durability
