Anton really cares about his characters, introducing them in such a way that you will instantly love them or understand and appreciate why they are the way they are. I loved young Billy Brogan and I couldn't help but equate the debonair Raymond de Guise with Anton himself, charming and handsome!

The variety of characters is well done, with Raymond being my absolute favourite as he is well rounded and there are times where he does show his flaws and he is not the “perfect man” making him more human. I also felt that Miss Edgerton was a wonderfully well done character, with me feeling sympathy and anger in equal measure throughout. Captivating and well-written. Du Beke began dancing at 14, when he discovered his local dance school, the Holton School of Dancing in Sevenoaks. [4] He had three partners during these formative years before the Holton School of Dancing closed in 1987. Du Beke left school at 16 to follow an amateur dancing career. [4] At 17, he decided to specialise in ballroom. While he danced during the evenings and at weekends, he had a day job as a salesman in "The Bed Post" in Petts Wood, South London. As an historian, I loved the insight into the 1930s London in the period of the coronation of King George VI and the lead up to the Second World War. The book evokes the same nostalgia as Downton Abbey and Gosford Park, and I could easily imagine this to be made into a Sunday night series. But don't let this put you off as there stories weave together perfectly, and I soon got to grips with everyone. The fate of the hotel as a whole rests as it has always done in the hands of another person with a secret, Maynard Charles, who is determined to use any means to keep the hotel in prime position. As society in London and internationally struggles to come to terms with potential disaster, the other side of London life is revealed. This is a splendid book of people and place, of crisis and challenge. It follows on from the successful “One Enchanted Evening”, but it stands alone in terms of a very readable novel.
