It took forty horses to drag the wagons out and up the hill to Old Stratford. In 1823, the year of the great flood, a stage coach overturned on the 8th of November and the passengers were only just saved. In 1834, Parliament passed an act for a new bridge. The level of the road and the bridge was raised to help prevent flooding. Most of the album is inspired by Delta blues, and Rea explains that "it's less aggressive than Chicago blues, and the guitar playing has a style I call curling: there are some notes that are not a sharp or a flat, but a bend of emotion. It's a mournful sound, and Delta people sing about deep pain, deep fear, and trying to save one's soul. Chicago players sing about girls and booze. Delta bluesmen were singing to the sky; Chicago bluesmen developed their stage act by singing to people who were drinking. It's a big difference". Particularly inspired by his original influence to take slide guitar, Charley Patton, others are Son House, Lead Belly, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Willie Johnson and Robert Johnson. It represents the hurdles and obstacles individuals encounter on their personal journeys towards finding inner peace and purpose. 3. How does Stony Road resonate with listeners? Starred Review. A provocative, lucid, and urgent contribution to the study of race in America." - Kirkus While Stony Road may not have reached the same commercial heights as some of Chris Rea’s earlier hits, it remains a beloved and critically acclaimed song. Its profound lyrics and captivating melodies have resonated with fans and continue to be appreciated years after its release. 8. How does Stony Road differ from Chris Rea’s other songs? Bridges were built and then unmaintained and left to fall into disrepair. Men were expected to give a few days of their time each year to maintenance of the roads. This was very unpopular, as repairs were normally carried out in good weather, just at the time when work was most plentiful on the farms etc. Watling Street continued to be a major thoroughfare in the late medieval period, being the major road from London to Cheshire and north Wales, also allowing access to Lancashire and the region west of the Pennines. Like the Romans before them, medieval armies marched along it to and from London on campaigns in the English and Welsh regions. Stony Stratford was involved in two key episodes during this period.
