About this deal

As mentioned above, chloramine-t is a fungicide, algaecide, antibacterial/germicide, and virucide, so it helps to both treat and prevent a host of issues both inside and outside of ponds. In aquariums, aquaculture, and ponds, chloramine-t is most often used to treat bacterial gill disease but is also utilized to treat gill and skin flukes, fungal infections, costia, chilodonella, trichodina, and is particularly effective against myxobacteria. Chloramines remain in the water longer than chlorine. Monochloramines are most effective when the pH value is 7 or higher. When the pH value exceeds 7 the water is alkaline. The benefit of alkaline water is that it is less corrosive than acid water. When the pH value is high chlorine can be found in the water as hypochlorite ions (OCl -). These ions have a higher oxidation potential than underchloric acid. However, as a disinfectant it is a hundred times less effective than underchloric acid. When pH values are too high, its affectivity will diminish.

Chloramine-t is extremely reactive, and so should only be used in small doses and as a last resort rather than a first response since even low doses can cause issues such as gill burns and stress. Try utilizing more natural methods such as salt baths before resorting to chloramine-t treatments. Also don’t use chloramine-t while using any other medications or treatments (with the exception of salt), as chloramine-t can and likely will react with them and the results could be quite toxic to your fish. What is water disinfection? Necessity of drinking water disinfection History of water disinfection Waterborne diseases Factors that influence disinfection Conditions of water disinfection Regulation drinking water disinfection EU USA It converts iodide to iodine monochloride (ICl). ICl rapidly undergoes electrophilic substitution predominantly with activated aromatic rings, such as those of the amino acid tyrosine. Thus, chloramine-T is used to incorporate iodine into peptides and proteins. Chloramine-T together with iodogen or lactoperoxidase is commonly used for labeling peptides and proteins with radioiodine isotopes. [6] Certifications [ edit ]

Chloramine-T Properties

Tert-butyl hypochlorite can be used instead of bleach: [7] R 2NH + t-BuOCl → R 2NCl + t-BuOH Swimming pools [ edit ] Q: I have to remove chlorine & chloramine from my tap water so why am I now adding it in with these products? A: Although they share very similar names, chloramine and chloramine T are in fact very different compounds and have quite different properties.

Do not use if the pH is below 7, the carbonate hardness (KH) is below 6°dH and/or the general hardness (GH) is below 6°dH. Do not use in bright sunlight or in hot, humid, thundery conditions. Chloramines are applied more and more often in the United States as an alternative for chlorine during secundary disinfection of drinking water. in the year 2002, 20% of the US drinking water production companies used chloramines. The main reason for the transfer from chlorine to chloramines is that chloramines react with organic matter less often than chlorine. Chemical disinfectants Chlorine Sodium hypochlorite Chloramines Chlorine dioxide Copper silver ionization Hydrogen peroxide Bromine Peroxone Peracetic acid Drinking chloramine-containing water or using it for boiling and bathing is safe, because of a neutralization of chloramines in the metabolism. However, people with weakened immune systems, such as young children, elderly people, people with HIV and people that undergo chemo therapy, should also be cautious when it comes to the use of chloramine disinfected water. When chloramines are chemically removed, ammonia may be released. The toxic effect that ammonia has on fish can be prevented by the application of biological filters, natural zeolites and pH-control.Oxidation of some aldehydes by chloramine-T has been reported to occur quantitatively in an alkaline solution, giving the corresponding acid as the end product. Both direct and indirect methods have been carried out to estimate aldehydes by chloramine-T. Chloramine-T (CAT) is also commonly used in radiolabeling bioactive molecules by halogenation. CAT is used to release radioactive elemental iodine by oxidation of its salts. Unfortunately, CAT is a strong oxidizing agent and can cause significant damage to peptides and proteins. This may lower the yield of the iodination reaction and may produce undesirable side products[1-2]. Discharge demands for cooling tower water in the USA are mentioned in the Clean Water Act (CWA) and are established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The sodium salt of p-toluenesulfochloramide, commonly known as chloramine-T, exerts strong oxidizing action in both acidic and alkaline media and thus has been widely used for the oxidimetric determination of a large number of inorganic and organic substances. Fishes can directly take up chloramines in the blood through their gills. Chloramines are toxic to fishes, too. Water that is used in aquaria should be free from chloramines. Chloramines can be used as bleach, disinfectants and oxidators. Organic disinfectants slowly give off chlorine, causing a slower and less aggressive disinfection than with hypochlorite (OCl -). Chloramines can be used to improve odor and flavor of the water when chlorine is used as a disinfectant. Chloramines are also used for the disinfection of drinking water and wastewater and to resist biofouling in cooling water systems.
