About this deal

Hose connection: If you'll be using a large-capacity dehumidifier for a particularly wet job, finding a dehumidifier with a hose connection can save you from having to empty the machine manually. A portable dehumidifier dries the air in your home. Most dehumidifiers work in the same way, cooling room air to condense out excess moisture. However, not all are created equal. Through detailed testing, we’ll help you make the best choice for your needs. Dehumidifiers don’t have to be noisy, and there are some good near-silent options. They will work discreetly in your home without interfering with your sleep or work, so a quiet mode or eco mode is well worth any extra, particularly if it will save you some cash in running costs. Air conditioners have a drain or reservoir to remove or collect condensed water. So, if you have air conditioning it might reduce your need for a dehumidifier. However, keep in mind that drying your air isn’t the main function of an A/C unit. One benefit of them is that they have smart Dehumidification Technology. The Smart technology automatically controls the room humidity in a comfortable range of 45 - 55%, preventing growth of bacteria. A second benefit of Midea Dehumidifiers is that they have a low noise design. They have noise as low as 39dB, and maximise the comfort by optimising the refrigeration and air duct systems.

A small humidifier removes 20 to 25 pints of moisture at 65°F, or 30 to 40 pints at 80°F (about 400 to 600-plus square feet). Don’t get too excited about any claims of silent running – we found that, while actively dehumidifying, it puts out around 50dB on all of its three settings, so you won’t want to sit and watch the TV while it’s on. However, it’s a good performer for its size, reducing humidity in a damp-prone living room by 9% in the first hour and by nearly 22% within two hours. The laundry function’s quite effective too, helping dry your washing indoors without adding a layer of condensation to the windows. And at 9kg it’s light enough to take from room to room, making this a great dehumidifier for the average flat or small to medium-sized home. Each dehumidifier ran for two hours at its highest fan setting and set to continuous running mode. After, we measured to see how much water it had collected. Low Noise Design- minimise noise and maximise comfort by optimising the refrigeration and air duct systems. The noise is as low as 39dB. The DF Dehumidifier also uses reciprocating compressor technology allowing less vibration to effectively reducing the noise level.

How much does a dehumidifier cost to run?

Of the units we tested, at 38°F, it had the lowest operating temperature. The tolerance for cold makes the Hisense a great choice as a basement dehumidifier. If you're only dealing with a little moisture in a bathroom or other confined space, for example a home office in a finished basement, you can save money without sacrificing comfort with a small-capacity dehumidifier, like this 35-pint unit from Frigidaire.

Auto-humidistat: This can sense the moisture in the air and turn off automatically once the desired level is reached. The good news is that if you take these simple steps and keep the dehumidifier clean, it will run more efficiently. Also, because there’ll be less stress placed on the components it should last longer. What Is A Comfortable Humidity Range? All dehumidifiers have filters to keep dust off the heat exchangers. The Frigidaire has the sturdiest of those tested. In other cases it felt like the filters or clips that held them in place would break sooner or later. It all depends on how much space you need to dehumidify. Dehumidifiers are often rated in terms of their extraction rate: how much water they can remove from the air in a single day. This is separate from their water tank capacity, which covers how much water they can store before you need to empty them out. The Hisense has reservoir removal from the front of the unit. While the reservoir feels a little flimsy, it’s easy to carry and empty without spilling.

How we tested

A dehumidifier is like an air conditioner. It has a cooling compressor linked to cooling coils. A fan pulls air across these, cooling it down, and condensing out some of the water it contains. This drips down into a collection reservoir. A large humidifier removes 40 to 55 pints of moisture at 65°F, or 70 to 90 pints at 80°F (about 1,200 to 1,500-plus square feet). All dehumidifiers can run in a stand-alone mode where all the water is collected in the reservoir. This means regularly carrying the reservoir to the nearest drain or sink and pouring it out. Hands-on testing begins in our Lab under controlled humidity and temperature conditions. The key performance-based test measures how much water each dehumidifier collects in a 48-hour time period. Our engineers also use a decibel meter to assess how loud each machine is when running at its highest fan speed. Usability is another important part of our evaluation; it happens in the Lab, as well as in the homes of consumer testers, allowing us to test the dehumidifiers under real-world conditions.

The Princess isn’t as quiet as Meaco’s Arete models, but you can live with the 46dB it puts out at its highest fan setting, or the 40dB noise levels at low. It also has a useful laundry drying feature that makes the most of the vertical swing on the air output and the powerful fan. It’s simple to control, either through the app or via the built-in controls, and you can keep an eye on the current humidity level through a subtle “hidden” digital display on the front. Rival dehumidifiers have the edge on noise and performance, but the Princess gives you a great set of features at a very reasonable price. The reservoir also has a strong, comfortable carrying handle. The simple shape means that it’s easy to empty without spills.

What causes high humidity? And should it concern me?

A medium humidifier removes 30 to 35 pints of moisture at 65°F, or 50 to 60 pints at 80°F (about 800 to 1,000-plus square feet). As a consequence, the biggest dehumidifiers, which originally offered 70-pint capacities, have now been reduced to capacities of 45-50 pints. This is because warm air can hold more water than cool air, so the dehumidifier will naturally absorb less in lower temperatures.

Auto Restart - if the unit turns off unexpectedly due to the power being cut, it will restart with the previous function setting automatically when the power resumes. Key specs – Dehumidifier type: Desiccant; Tank size: 2l; Extraction rate: 6 litres per day; Dimensions: 48.5 x 29 x 17.5cm; Weight: 6kg; Warranty: 2 years The Frigidaire Gallery’s reservoir cover allows for smooth water pouring without spills. A handy level indicator clearly shows how full the reservoir is.

The verdict: Dehumidifiers

Despite the low price point, the Hisense is energy efficient at reducing humidity. It features a convenient auto mode, which adjusts the fan level as needed to keep humidity at a comfortable 50%. This saves energy as it keeps the fan speed low once the target humidity is reached. What bumped the Frigidaire FFAP5033W1 above the other devices we considered is its design. It's sleek and has an attractive digital display, making it easy to see indicator lights and settings. Key specs – Dehumidifier type: Compressor; Tank size: 2.5l; Extraction rate: 10 litres per day; Dimensions: 47.2 x 23.7 x 31.9cm (HWD); Warranty: 5 years parts and labour This varies according to the design, size and extraction rate. Generally speaking, desiccant dehumidifiers use more energy per hour than a compressor model, but can also work more effectively at removing moisture, which means costs tend to even out.
