About this deal

Moving along to the entire group, there are also very minor differences in how you mount your bike to each one in terms of the clasp/lever, but that’s too a wash. About the only notable difference here is that the Saris Magnus/M2 has a nifty resistance knob that makes it easy to ensure your bike is at the same resistance setting each time. It’s actually kinda brilliant. Just like the Elite Tuo with the toaster lever getting you to the same exact point each time is.

Only to realize you had it right the first time, but just didn’t think to undo the spinning knob all the way to make room for the tire. After installing the board, the issue is still there (only after 15 minutes of ride on the new board)

CADENCE

In my testing on Zwift, at 100% trainer difficulty, with numerous climbs just under 10%, it felt fine, and the resistance correctly smoothly applied while going through the rollers on the Titans Grove course. A cheap direct drive trainer will give you more reliable power figures. Although it probably won't be as accurate as a premium model, a figure of +/- 3 per cent in power readings isn't going to make a lot of difference to your training and racing. You'll have to buy a cassette to hook up to your bike, but you'll save wear on your rear tyre. What more do I get from a premium smart trainer?

Oh, and if you’re looking for my 2020 Cycling Smart Trainer Apps guide, you’ll find that from late this past spring here. There honestly hasn’t been a fundamental shift in apps since then, as most apps have been trying to keep up with the surge in their user base.) How I Make Trainer Recommendations: I’m not entirely sure what the exact issue is here. You might think that it was the relatively light flywheel struggling with the steeper gradients, but the 7% inclines I first noticed the issue on were easily handled by the Elite Zumo – which has a lighter flywheel and a lower maximum gradient. The general setup wasn’t complex, but the massive booklet made the process overly complicated. The explanation of terms is beyond what is actually needed and could easily frustrate or overwhelm first-time smart trainer users. Once I installed the alloy resistance unit to the frame (and after fighting with the screws and washers for a bit), I installed my bike. At first, I installed my ‘cross bike on the unit with a smooth 35mm tire, hoping to take advantage of the ability to keep my training wheelset on. When trying to engage the resistance roller, I noticed that the tire was too big for the default “Road Channel” (the one closer to the front of the bike), and I had to switch to the secondary “MTB Channel.” After taking the unit apart again and reinstalling the resistance unit, I installed my bike. At this point, I noticed that the tire was not engaging properly on the roller. This time the wheel was too far from the roller and slipping at the tightest setting of the resistance knob.

KEY SPECS

With that, Tacx got rid of the low-speed slip-sprint problem of the NEO 1/2. That sub-second issue was rare for most people, but basically occurred if you were at very low speeds (like going up a steep hill, or just easy pedaling on the flats waiting for your buddy) – and then instantly sprinted hard. It would feel like the trainer ‘slipped’ for a fraction of a second. It never really bothered that many people with the NEO 1/2, but either way, it’s gone now. And…that’s it in terms of end-user differences. Open/Standard Communication Channel: Via ANT+ FE-C (all trainers use this today) or Bluetooth Smart FTMS (most trainers have this today as well). This set shows a few transients done with two-second drop-outs across multiple devices, something must have been up WiFi interference wise this day in the Cave) Canyon Bike Setup #1: PowerTap G3 Hub power meter, Quarq DZero crankset power meter, SRM X SPD pedal power meter
