About this deal

The moth was first reported in Scotland (from Fife) in 2018, it having also been reported from several areas in Wales. There have been increasing reports of the adult moth from coastal localities along southern and south-eastern England, these likely to be primary immigrants from the continent. Moths can also be lured using pheromones, or more traditional means such as wine ropes and sugaring. Sugaring is remarkably effective for 'old lady' moths - I once had a patch covered with these in the garden from a sugaring experiment. Never seen them in a MV trap, ever! Moth Trap Bulbs Don't ever trap on consecutive nights. Catching and recatching the same moths deprives them of a chance to feed and mate. Invest in an ID guide to help you identify the moths you attract. Concise Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland is a great place to start, while Field Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland is chunkier.

Chemical sprays are best used on the young caterpillar as you need a lot of spraying to penetrate the webbing. Avoid using chemicals when the box is in flower or near flowering plants as it can harm pollinators. Have you seen box tree caterpillars or moths? As you run a mothtrap, you will catch moths which are in various part of their lifecycles, and some may perish during the night when they were caught because they were at the end of their natural cycle. This is sad but normal, although obviously you should do everything you can to avoid accelerating their demise. You will catch moths in all manner of condition - some will be fresh and in perfect condition, whereas others will be bald! it tends to be the older moths that have lost scales and are balding, although exactly why is open to some debate (I've heard it mentioned that it maybe due to crawling into small spaces). You may even catch a moth that is ready to lay its eggs and it is not unknown to have eggs laid on the eggboxes inside the trap. Kids The caterpillars have a range of natural enemies, including parasitoid flies, parasitoid wasps, social wasps, spiders and ants until they’re ready to transition to the pupal stage. At this stage, they attach to a stem and spin a silken cocoon, remaining wrapped in silk for up to three weeks. OK, so hand removal doesn’t sound all that fun. But when you’ve noticed the start of an infestation, hand removal may be all you need to control their numbers. Simply put on some protective gloves and get to work, removing each caterpillar by hand.Box tree caterpillar eggs are laid on the underside of box leaves and are yellow and flattish. Caterpillars If the problem persists, remove the affected plants and replace them with new ones. The best plants for deterring box caterpillars But how do you know it’s a box caterpillar infestation? To recognise this, you need to know the signs. What Are the Signs of a Box Caterpillar Infestation? Use a clean, disinfected spray bottle to apply Xentari. Spray it as soon as you notice the first caterpillars on your box hedge, both on the top surfaces of the leaves and the undersides, too.

The caterpillars feed on and are a pest of box ( Buxus), and they almost certainly arrived in the UK on imported Buxus plants. Habitat Another action to take is to use a pheromone trap. Have these up around your boxwood to attract any male moths away from your plants. Installing traps won’t be the only step you need to take, but they’ll give you a heads-up to get your gloves on or an insecticide at the ready. We have a 60-day return policy, which means you have 60 days after receiving your item to return it. Trunking, a plastic strip material that is normally used to hide cables such as internet cat5 cables running up and down walls. Trunking is normally one inch wide and has two sides to it, this was the cheapest bendy plastic material that I could find at the time that didn't cost the earth and that I could shape round the outside of the top rim of the tub above. Placed on the outide, the trunking adds a rim so that you can rest the polycarbonate doughnut shape on the inside in a pyramidical cone type shape and rest the funnel on top of that, on which the light is fixed. I fixed the trunking on the outside of the top of the tub using a handful of one inch nuts and bolts. If natural treatments are not enough to eliminate box caterpillars, you’ll have to rely on harsher chemical treatments.Wait a couple of days for the insecticide to work its magic. During this time, the box caterpillars will eat the protein crystals Xentari contains. These crystals damage the caterpillar’s gut cells, eventually causing blood poisoning and death within 1 – 3 days.

To help avoid the problem, try not to clip plants too often so they grow a bit looser and air can circulate easily. Also avoid growing other plants too close to them, and try not to get water on the plants when watering. It’s a good idea not to trim box when wet weather is forecast. Some varieties seem more blight-resistant than others, such as B. microphylla ‘Faulkner’ and B. microphylla var. japonica ‘National’. Alternatives to box (buxus) Total Wardrobe Care’s Moth Box Trap has been specially designed to stop the breeding cycle of moths that lay eggs. It is important to do this effectively, so you can achieve long-term moth free results and accomplish a full wardrobe recovery. HOW DO MOTH TRAPS WORK? Release your moths into some nice dense vegetation where they don't get gobbled up by the first bird that comes along. A lot of moths do fly before dusk so starting it before nightfall will catch these. Make sure you have a rain guard on there if it's likely to rain in the night, then empty the mothtrap at your leisure in the morning. As box caterpillars feed on the leaves, they tend to leave behind skeletonised leaves with only the veins remaining. This can give the plant a web-like appearance, as the caterpillars consume all of the soft tissue between the veins. If you’ve decided that you don’t want to grow box anymore but are still looking for a shrub with neat, evergreen foliage that responds well to pruning, try these plants instead: Yew (Taxus baccata)
