About this deal

I find it endlessly fascinating, and I call that world “imaginary” not to disparage or belittle it. Imagination is one of our highest faculties, and wherever it appears, however it “bodies forth / The forms of things unknown” (Theseus in A Midsummer Night’s Dream), I want to treat it with respect. At its most intense it becomes a kind of perception, as in William Blake’s notion of “Twofold Vision”, by which he means what we see when we look “not with but through the eye”: the state of mind in which we can “see a World in a Grain of Sand / And a Heaven in a Wild Flower”. Other poets describe something similar: in Wordsworth’s “Ode on Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood” he recalls a time “when meadow, grove, and stream, / The earth, and every common sight, / To me did seem / Apparelled in celestial light, / The glory and the freshness of a dream.” Thomas Traherne’s vision of “orient and immortal wheat” in the everyday corn comes from the same apprehension. Whoever hides in a house of stone the notable letters of these sacred verses inscribed on tin, as many things as broad Earth nourishes shall not harm him nor as many things as much-groaning Amphitrite rears in the sea. A Stag Beetle Lectures on the Futility of Flight Barbara Cumbers Members' Poems - Ecology/The Environment

Poems bring pleasure to many. Being generally short, focusing on careful word choice and patterns, poems can cover the entire range of human emotions. They can be fun, they can be personal. They can be shared with those you love and shared with strangers too. Reading through poems slowly to allow their message to unravel is an almost meditative experience. If you find a poem that resonates, try reading it aloud as the way poetry sounds when read aloud is as important as the theme or visual imagery. Poetry for therapy

The deity Abrasax is invoked to drive off the unknown daimon or other hostile entity that afflicts little Sophia-Priskilla.

November 2023, 6.30pm. Roundtable discussion about Poetry & Magic, featuring Professor John Tresch (Warburg Institute), author Iain Sinclair, and professional witch Dr Kate Tomas.

The Members’ Poems competition sets Poetry Society Members the task of writing a poem or poems on a theme chosen by a leading poet. You’ll dedicate each line or stanza to a specific idea or feeling you’d like to conjure, let go of, or release. Each line, in effect, will give you the opportunity to focus your intention and energy. This is where poetry spells really get powerful since you can focus stanzas or lines on archetypes, gods, goddesses, guides, ancestral symbols, power colors, sacred sounds, or goals and conjurings.November 2023, 6.30pm. Michael Phillips – Blake and Italy. Michael Phillips, master printmaker and leading expert on William Blake, will explore the influence of Italian art on Blake’s work. If we are the soil, the poetry is the rose that blooms. And the magic — that’s what brings it to the surface. No doubt more could be said, but the starting poet may be feeling impatient. Theorists, like clever lawyers, can prove anything, and it is all too easy for an atrocious piece of writing to be defended by irrefutable standards. Are there not more practical ways of assessing poetry?

Read Natalie Diaz’s “ No More Cake Here.” What kind of magic appears in these poems? What kind of party does Diaz imagine, and what purpose does it serve? What story does it tell about the speaker’s brother, and why might she have chosen to write a poem like this to tell that story? You can read more about weed witchcraft right here — Weed Witchcraft: A Ritual With The High Priestess of Smoke by Moxie McMurder, who writes, “Smoking the holy herb is a spiritual act, one that puts you in touch with the four elements and when practiced correctly can lift the veil reveal and nature's secrets.” Just remember to stay safe, be legal, and talk to a doctor before using any psychoactive substance. Of course, he hadn’t done anything of the sort, and he eventually convinced the man of this – and helped him recover. But, later on, I would witness events that I could only describe with the word “magic.” What words mean something to you? What words speak to your memories and personal power? Are there words that speak to your identity, your resistance, your body, your journey? Choose five of these words and write a 5-stanza poem using each of them, or write five poems (as a set to be read aloud together) utilizing each. When you speak them aloud, you can call on these qualities. Dream poetry There are many ways to write poetry spells. The poem itself can work as a spell through its language (calling on what you want or releasing something), or through its structure and pacing (emphasizing breath work and musicality can create a prayer-like experience).

The deadline for entries is Friday 27 October 2023; poems must be unpublished as of our spring Poetry News issue publication date at end December 2023. Cool observation: detached and depersonalized viewpoints and characters, usually informal, sometimes unfinished.
