About this deal

Yes, it’s slightly more compact and those with very large hands might feel a bit cramped while playing, but I had no problems at all. This small size reduction makes it far more portable, and the removal of the bezels make it that little bit more immersive. All three devices in the lineup are dual boot Linux and Android with the exception of the RG353VS variant which is Linux only and only 1GB of memory in an attempt to reduce costs on the line.

On your first boot of the OS make sure to open System Settings (start button) and enable the “Device is RG353V” option. This will fix your missing audio issues. The start and select are in the same position. I know many of you like these on the face of the device but I do not, and the outdated white text doesn’t help the minimal metal aesthetic in my opinion. Remove the TF2 microSD card from your device and insert it in your laptop/PC via a microSD card reader. The easiest method for adding your own games to the RG353 device is to pop the TF2 card into your PC. Once the SD card it read, you should be able to easily navigate to it in your file explorer. Do not delete any of the existing folders in the EASYROMS (roms) folder or any of their existing contents. There are some dependencies in some of these folders (ex. PSP and NDS) that's needed for those emulators to work correctly. The RG353 has two separate SD card slots. The TF1 slot card will hold your Linux OS and all relevant files. The TF2 slot card is extra storage and can therefore be used to hold your games. The TF1 slot contains the SD card for your Linux OS. To replace this card, you’ll need to flash one of the Linux operating systems onto this new card. For this, you can use a smaller SD card of 8GB or so as it will only be used for the OS going forward. See my guide for Installing Custom Firmware (CFW) on the RG353

RG353M Specifications

In the hand, the RG405M feels lovely and offers a premium device feel, and as with the RG353M, it’s made from aluminum alloy, and it’s incredibly comfortable and smooth to hold. Build quality is superb and weighing in at around 250g, it’s portable whilst still feeling like a very premium product. Edit April 2023: The issue with the v2 screens has been fixed in newer builds of the ArkOS installation Another great firmware is UnofficialOS. This OS originally started as a compiled distribution of the JELOS firmware after the JELOS team stopped providing compiled images. It has now morphed into it’s own fork of the JELOS firmware with it’s own custom development making it a separate OS.

ANBERNIC has kept in their lane with this device and tweaked it efficiently over the last two years to a point where it’s close to perfect. The RG405M now has a 4” IPS touchscreen display, a slight increase from the RG353M 3.5” screen. The resolution of 640 x 480 stays the same though. The 4:3 ratio on a 4” screen is perfect when playing your retro games. For ArkOS on the RG351V, RG351MP, RG353M, RG353V/VS, or RG503, if SD2 is being used for roms, installation must be in /roms2/tools/. The .sh file must remain in the PortMaster folder! We can see from the three benchmarks; Antutu, Geekbench and 3DMark, that the RG505 sits in between the older RG552 and the over double the price of GPD XP+ Android handhelds. It is based on Ubuntu 19.10 and has both a 64 bit and 32 bit userspace to offer as broad of an opportunity for incorporating support for various video game system emulators and ports as possible. This OS offers the following capabilities: On top of the device you will find newly designed shoulder buttons, and this is because the device is considerably thinner than the previous model, so notable in fact that it feels like a whole new handheld and the reduction in size means reduction in weight, coming in at just 232g which is fairly light for a metal device. There were some caveats to this though, mainly down to the design layout of the rear buttons, which weren’t exactly comfortable to use. But overall, the RG353V was a great handheld. So, in usual fashion, Anbernic have released a third reiteration of the RG353V (the second being the RG353VS). I’d like to welcome the new re-designed RG353M (“M” standing for metal). If you are a pure retro gamer and into your retro handhelds, you will know that Anbernic will often release the “M” version as a premium handheld. And the RG353M is now certainly a premium looking and feeling handheld.

Note: Cores running through Retroarch will have the prefix “Retroarch:”. Emulators/cores without this prefix are likely standalone emulators, which will run outside of Retroarch. So overall, Anbernic have done it yet again. They have released an upgraded “M” version of another handheld. Some might see this as just a money-making ploy with little substance or need to acquire. I would say that they are completely wrong. There is certainly enough here to warrant this as a must-have gaming handheld. And I totally recommend this upgraded version to all retro gaming enthusiasts. I recently wrote an article about the new Anbernic RG353V gaming handheld and how the company had released a vertical gaming handheld that ran on both a Linux & Android OS. In the article I praised the RG353V for being a great hybrid handheld. Not only that, but it had a fantastic screen, could play most games really well, even up to PSP (but sorry, no God of War), and it was super portable due to its size. This distribution is very close to JELOS in terms of emulators being configurable and being lightweight, however, as custom development continues separately from the original OS you can expect it to start to diverge more. Note: For ArkOS on the RG351V or RG351MP, if SD2 is being used for roms, unzip the port to the /roms2/ports folder instead and copy the PortMaster folder to the /roms2/tools location. A few additional ports are available on the large releases repo ( https://github.com/PortsMaster/PortMaster-Releases/releases) due to their size (ex. SuperTux, Ur Quan Masters, and FreedroidRPG). How do I get more info about the ports in this repo like the sources used and additional asset needs if applicable? Most of the the ports available through PortMaster have been configured to launch with proper controls for the Gameforce Chi, Powkiddy RGB10, Anbernic RG351P/M/V/MP, RK2020 and the Odroid Go Advance units. Controls for the Anbernic RG552, Odroid Go Super and the Powkiddy RGB10 Max are also included and have been tested but not as much as the 3.5" RK3326 devices. Install info This can be accomplished by either using either network connectivity (samba share or ftp) or by shutting down the device (start + power) then inserting the SD card into the computer.
