River Ripple begins to encounter the mountain cats a bit more: a she-cat named Dappled Pelt helps when Night is injured, and River Ripple helps the cats escape a forest fire. One night he awakens to see spirit cats, who lead him to The Four Trees, where the mountain cats are fighting. He watches in horror, seeing them die, but the spirits tell him to wait: after the fight, he can be a bridge to peace. After the battle concludes, the spirits tell everyone that they must "unite or die". River Ripple accepts that he has a "group" just as much as the others, and does his best to try to be a leader. When Leopardkit is apprenticed, becoming Leopardpaw, Whitefang manages to create a path around the obstacle of Leopardpaw being afraid of water, and is extremely impressed when Leopardpaw and Sunpaw bring him the news that Leopardpaw got over her fear. From then on, Whitefang did exclusive water training with her, knowing that he had to catch her up to the other apprentices. After passing her assessment of catching land prey, Leopardpaw earns her warrior name Leopardfur, and Whitefang is very proud of her. Pretty average super edition imo. The first half was pretty good, with fun characterization and a really neat look into a group of cats and how they came together. I loved Riverstar and Night's interactions, and Drizzle was an unexpected favorite. The way River personified the river and saw it as a genuine friend was very heartwarming, and I also was glad to see his mindfulness/meditation skills focus so prominently in the book. I think that's, like, the first skill I've ever seen a character have in this book that could actually be useful for its readers to utilize too, haha.
