This number is the amount of dice to roll when testing that specific Skill. The other Skills must all have a value of 3 except for the one that is considered the weak point of the character; it will be assigned a value of 2. Everything from Vampires to Frankenstein’s Monster are covered with a huge variety of gothic favourites. If monsters aren’t for you then you can break out the stakes and play as the Slayer Archetype to hunt down monsters as well! One thing that I learnt through this project is that the definition of Horror is extremely broad. Jaws, Jurassic Park, Scooby Doo, all these titles fit within the Horror genre just not in the gorey axe wielding murderer way that maybe you see picturing a ‘traditional’ horror film or tv show in your head.

Speaking of Dread, it’s the time of year to remind players that Dread is a classic of horror roleplaying games for a reason. Beginning with character questionnaires that probe into the strengths, weaknesses and deepest flaws of the characters that you’ll bring to the table, you’ll be relying on your own shaking fingers to ensure that you make it out the other end alive. Some Talent dice faces have more than one Talent symbol on them. So you might roll that d8, show two Talent symbols, and get two more successes.

The level indicates the progression of the character and how many Ability Points she can spend in the Ability Tree of her Archetype. As we’ll see in this review, character creation in Shiver is intuitive. Like many other modern games, this phase is smooth thanks to the use of Archetypes that act as a skeleton for the construction of the heroes. Skills, Talents but above all Dice
