About this deal

Assembling the promenade sides not the way trumpeter suggest so as to ensure figures and lighting can be added successfully The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.

If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.

As promised on one of my original posts, this will be a bit of a sporadic build while I finish my Niagara. These were whipped together by cutting some short lengths of telescoping tubes – the inner tube aligned to the appropriate porthole size and the outer tubes to sit flush with the hull: This set also corrects the lifeboat complement, with 20 new resin craft: 14 are 30ft 64-man boats, plus four 28ft 40-man collapsible boats – all depicted with realistic stretched canvas covers – and two 25ft 33-man rescue cutters, which were usually rigged for emergency launching. There’s a resin jig to assist assembly of the 40 PE passenger benches, while the ship’s propellers are furnished in 3D-printed resin. One big disappointment with the kit concerns the watertight doors, which are moulded integrally with the walls and are devoid of detail; MK1’s solution is to provide these as separate PE items, with handrails and bulkhead-mounted lights treated in a similar fashion. The Titanic has been attracting modelers for decades. Many different plastic scale model kits of the Titanic have been released so far. Their quality, of course, varies widely. Today we will be looking at some of the best titanic model kits available on the market. Drilling out the portholes alone on this hull will take some time (I intend to light the hull, as well as embellish the included LED kit for the superstructure).

For the largest diameter I used the nearest size tubing and filed a beveled edge using a large coarse file. I’ve done a cursory comparison of Mr. Boyd’s notes to some of the Titanic profile views available online and almost everything appears to align. There might be a small discrepancy on the port side superstructure where a door and window on the kit need to be removed and are not identified, but otherwise all good. I then painted it up, electing to use some of the colourised images of the Olympic promenades and do the lower panels in a green. This photo is after the initial coats of white, brown and green and the Trumpeter PE provided window frames went in. Still some touching up to be done after the initial paint drys thoroughly and probably once I get a new script for my glasses, as I think my eyesight has deteriorated since I started this.

I will be using a number of books, primarily 'Titanic - The Ship Magnificent', to reference corrections to the hull (and model overall) as I go. I'm not a rivet counter, and have nothing put respect for those who are, but there are some obvious errors and omissions on the hull which even I should be able to fix up. Shown my Kit in General chat area of BM, please lets get some Titanic modelling done here ... its a big passion of mine, really is. I felt it to be a shame to leave out the Pontos sets interior detail for the lifeboats so my model will show the Portside boats with their covers on, and the starboard side without covers

That is not to say, however, that this project won’t be a labor of Love. I am building this for my daughter. She has been fascinated by the Titanic tragedy from a very young age. At age six she could tell you all about Captain Smith going down with the ship and nurse Jessop and her surviving multiple sinkings, etc. She made me get up in the wee hours on the exact date/time of the 100 th anniversary of her sinking to ring a bell in commemoration. We’ve even toured Margaret Brown’s home in Denver (nobody called her “Molly” in her lifetime). She is more interested in the human stories than the ship itself but will very much appreciate this representation when it is finally completed.

It’s difficult to say which kit is the best Titanic kit in the 1/700 scale. If I had to choose one kit I would probably get this one. Although the details of all the kits are very similar, and none of them are perfect, this one has one big advantage over the competition. The advantage is the inclusion of LED lights, which can be installed inside the model. Turn the LED lights on at night and the model will look awesome. Before adding the bolt flanges, I cemented some half round strip to the pintles to give them a cylindrical shape… This helped to set the outer diameter tightly into the porthole and centered the innermost tube properly… I will try something I haven't done since I screwed up my friend's Tirpitz when I was about 14... I do build models and have some skill, but I don't measure up to most on here! Finally, I added .010 x .030 strips to represent the butt laps between strakes. I thought this would match closer to the kit versions. Overlapping the styrene strakes (as in actual practice) seemed to me to be out of scale no matter how hard I tried to make them look like the Trumpeter versions.
