About this deal

In bad or even middling Zelda-alikes, you get craft and not much else. In the best, you get imagination, and you get dazzle, you get taken somewhere new. A few blemishes aside, the eight-year wait for Tunic has been completely worth it. If you could lay out all of its pieces separately like a broken puzzle, each one might seem derivative. However, when you put all the pieces together to create a full picture, they make for a game that's quite unlike anything else. As well as an incredibly detailed in-game instruction manual that doubles as a puzzle book (or triples as a strategy guide), complete with strange notes from some previous owner. It’s hard to summarize how the manual works in this game without spoiling some of the most interesting puzzles to hit video games in a good long while, but it is dense with information, delight, and mystery.

When I wasn’t banging my head against a wall trying to figure out where to go next in Tunic (which even has a cheeky achievement called “What now?” as if I hadn’t been asking myself that same question), I was able to actually somewhat enjoy its simplistic take on combat. However, it only shines for small parts of the game, and eventually is overshadowed by repetition. To play this game on PS5, your system may need to be updated to the latest system software. Although this game is playable on PS5, some features available on PS4 may be absent. See PlayStation.com/bc for more details.

Oh, to put it another way: the success of Zelda means it got codified. You'd approach each new game asking: what's the overworld this time? When do I get the boomerang? Breath of the Wild is one response to that problem. Maybe Dark Souls was in part a response to that too, actually. This game is another response. Shouldice wanted to combine challenging gameplay with "gentle and pleasing" visual and audio design. The colorful design was inspired by Nintendo Entertainment System games like The Legend of Zelda (1986), and was intended to inspire players to be brave and explore new areas that may be more challenging than they were ready for or which they felt they were "not supposed to be right now". [13] [16] He wanted players to feel "genuine discovery and mystery", both in finding parts that they did not yet understand, and also in learning things that re-contextualized previous parts. He had a design goal of adding "content for no one", meaning details and secrets that did not need to be found by all or any players to be worth including. [3] The isometric viewpoint and style of Monument Valley (2014) also influenced Tunic 's visuals. [17] [18] Reynolds, Matthew (June 12, 2017). "Isometric fox adventure Secret Legend is now Tunic". Throughout the world are shrines with a large fox statue; kneeling at these restores the fox's health, but also revives any defeated enemies. [7] When the fox dies, they are restored at the last shrine they have knelt at. [4] Some areas also include a teleport mechanism in the form of a golden platform, which allows the fox to access a realm called the Far Shore where they can exit through another golden platform in the world. [11] It wants to have simple combat, akin to something like the Zelda Oracle games, but that approach gets stale incredibly fast here. a b c d e f g h i j k l Grodt, Jill (March 16, 2022). THIS MONTH

Tunic is an action-adventure game set in the ruins of a post-apocalyptic fantasy world, in which the player character, an anthropomorphic fox, navigates the terrain and fights off hostile creatures. The player is initially given no directions or instructions, and the majority of the text is in a constructed writing system, with only some words presented in the player's selected language, such as English. The three-dimensional terrain is typically displayed from a fixed isometric view, though the perspective shifts at certain points. [1] a b c d e f g h Indee (March 16, 2022). "Tunic: Entre Zelda et Dark Souls, une incroyable révélation!"[Tunic: Between Zelda and Dark Souls, an incredible revelation!]. Jeuxvideo.com (in French). Webedia. Archived from the original on January 27, 2023 . Retrieved April 5, 2023. The last step was to assemble a team of brilliant collaborators to bring the lush world of Tunic to life. Rebekah and Adam Saltsman (Finji) joined long-time collaborators Kevin Regamey (Powerup Audio), Terence Lee (Lifeformed), and Felix Kramer (Burndown Productions) in 2017 before inviting level artist and programmer Eric Billingsley, Finji’s wonderful QA and marketing staff, the PR team at ICO, the porting engineers at 22nd Century Toys, and various other geniuses to join the party. Reviewers also praised the graphics and aesthetics. Grodt of Game Informer and Wakeling of GameSpot described the art style as "simple-but-beautiful", the GameSpot reviewer terming it an "extravagant diorama". [4] [5] The reviewers from IGN, PC Gamer, and Jeuxvideo praised the colorful and "delightful" art style, Jeuxvideo concluding that it was a very successful art direction that resulted in a beautiful and mysterious universe. [6] [8] [34] Game Informer, IGN, and Jeuxvideo also said the music was beautiful and serene, Game Informer adding that it made "an intriguing contrast to the tough battles".
