About this deal

Your lawn will need a bit of a tidy-up after aerating, depending on the tool you’ve used. Spike aerating shouldn’t leave that much aesthetic damage, so tidying up is minimal. There’s no need to overcomplicate things when it comes to some gardening tools, and the Ames 4-Spike Lawn Aerator is a great example of when simplicity works well.

Using a rolling lawn aerator is less physically demanding than a plug aerator, as long as the ground is sufficiently soft. They can still be relatively hard work to push, especially as they need to be driven into the ground. As mentioned above, putting weights on a spiked lawn aerator can help, but of course this will make it more taxing to push. The galvanized spikes can penetrate to a depth of 2.5 inches, and it has a lever for height adjustment. The flat-free tires roll smoothly and will never need to be filled. With a three-year limited warranty, this solid steel aerator will last through many years of lawn care. If your garden is anything like mine and you’re unfortunate enough to have soil with high levels of clay, then regular aeration is an absolute must!Sandy soil closes up more slowly, so biannually is usually sufficient. However, you might only need to aerate sections of sandy soil – mainly the areas of most heavy use.

The best advice we can give is: look at your grass. If a moss or thatch layer has developed on the soil surface, it will prevent water penetration. In that case, aeration or scarificationis needed. What is the best way to aerate a lawn? The rolling aerator is best suited for larger lawns that have a few slopes. The shoe aerator would not be able to cope with slopes as well as the roller. Powered Lawn Aerators Harder clay soils also needed to be aerated at least annually because of the difficulty with which this type of soil absorbs air and water for its roots. This hollow tine aerator helps revitalise the lawn by removing 2 x 1.27 cm plugs of earth each time it is pulled from the ground. The hollow tines pull out plugs of earth that are fairly sizeable, measuring 8.9 cm long. As a result, compacted soil is loosened and air, water and fertiliser can all reach further down into the ground. There are liquid aerationproducts available, which you simply water onto your lawn. But the verdict is still out – most experts refute the claim that liquid aerator products alleviate compaction by breaking down dense soil.

Whilst not the most comfortable of shoes, they can be slipped on over gardening boots without much difficulty. They usually have adjustable straps so will fit almost any shoe size. By appearance, the Kingfisher RC401 resembles a pitchfork. However, there are certain features that make it different. First things first, unlike regular pitchforks, the tines on this tool are hollow inside and have pointed tips, which allows you to push them deeper into the ground for better aeration. And secondly, it has a sturdy horizontal crossbar above the spikes where you can rest your foot to push the fork, making the whole process much more convenient.

One of the best things about manual aerators is how little faff they are to use. This manual aerator can be taken out of the box and used instantly, there’s no cable to worry about nor complex assembly. It’s very lightweight and easy to store. Plus, it makes it easy to work freely around the garden with no power cord to worry about. Manual Rolling Drum Aerators – these are time and labour saving, as you simply walk across the lawn pushing the roller
