About this deal

Helpfully, both the display angle and camera lens are adjustable, so you can find the right position between road and driver. Full HD footage is shot in HDR at 30fps, delivering balanced exposure and enough detail to make number plates legible. That said, we found that video suffers from noticeable stabilization wobble. This distortion doesn’t reduce the detail, but footage is worse than from other Garmin dash cams. The main specification that you need to look out for here is the video resolution, so for this, the recording needs to be 1080p at least - 720p just isn't good enough. All of the dash cams mentioned here are 1080p or above, but other image quality features come into play to make them a quality product.

The brand of product you buy can vary in importance, from person to person. Some people will of course be much more particular about the brands they will use. Whilst others aren’t interested in the brand and are more interested in the overall quality or price of the product itself. Thankfully Binatone is a brand that many customers have grown to love over the years and is very popular for items in the Dash cams category.Capable yet accessible, Thinkware’s X1000 comes bundled with everything you need to record front and rear. Our tests found a lot to like about the X1000. Its best attribute is its ease of use: with a large 3.5-inch touchscreen and icon-based interface, it’s simple to configure and there’s no need to rely on a smartphone partner app. The cheapest dash cams typically record footage at a lower resolution, either HD (1,280 x 720p) or Full HD (1,920 x 1,080p) and skip the fancy features that you'll find on premium models. These include the frame rate (how many frames are captured per second), having 'low light performance' features (meaning it can see well at any time of day), a high dynamic range (good levels of contrast in the image) and the widest lens possible (minimum 120 degrees). Extra features Wi-fi – wi-fi lets you transmit footage wirelessly from the camera to your device – so no need to remove it and take it indoors. Some dash cams also allow you to view footage from the dash cam in real time via the wireless connection. While features are limited to voice controls and a g-sensor that can detect collisions, we felt that GPS was the only real omission. Unless you need the best dash cam with driver assistance functions, the Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2 will leave you wanting for very little. Simple, subtle and reliable, it’s the definition of set-and-forget technology.

Capture settings can be tweaked via the touchscreen, but we found that it worked well right out of the box: results from both cameras were impressive, with plenty of crisp detail and decent dynamic range, even in dim and dark conditions. If you’re looking for a stress-free and reliable dash cam, the X1000 gets plenty right. All dash cams support at least HD resolution (1,280 x 720 pixels) but it's most common for dash cams to record in Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels). Some can record up to 4K (3,840 x 2,160 pixels). The next step for us was to look at all of the products that fall within the Dash cams category, of which we found 22 products at Argos. So we pulled together all of the prices of these products to analyse the average prices as well as finding the cheapest and most expensive options. If the worst were to happen, and you need to prove your innocence, the dash cam’s footage could do exactly that. This footage can also be set to include your speed, along with the time and date to help reinforce the validity of your evidence if blame is disputed by the other party. As well as monitoring the road ahead, dash cams can be used to record out of the rear windscreen too, recording footage if you are unfortunate enough to be rear-ended by another motorist. You may prefer to have your dash cam hardwired in, so will need to consider whether you want it installed professionally.

Recording and storing footage

MAIN MENU 2) Loop recording setting Press Up or Down button to select Loop recording menu, then press OK button, the following screen is displayed. Press Up or Down button to select the time per video which you want, you can select off also, then press OK button to confirm your selection and return to menu. If you selected “Off”, when you start video record, device will recording until micro SD card full, and save the video as one file. The next step was to try and narrow down our search even more. So we’ve already looked the prices of products in the Dash cams category. Then we’ve also looked at the prices of products from Binatone. So this step combines the two and looks specifically at the price you’d expect to pay for Binatone branded products in the Dash cams category. Lastly, some dash cams can be permanently installed in your vehicle and hard-wired, giving them a constant power supply. When paired with a special parking mode, this enables the camera to sense impacts and record footage while the car is parked, potentially gathering useful evidence of your neighbor’s poor parking. Can a dash cam drain your car battery?
