These songs were fictionally written, or written out of experiences that Melanie did not personally go through: There is both an explicit version and a clean version of the album. The standard album contains five explicit songs and eight non-explicit songs, while the deluxe version contains seven explicit songs, and nine non-explicit songs. This is Melanie's least explicit standard album; tied with PORTALS. Not long after Cry Baby was born, her mother labeled her as "a cry baby" because of her excessively loud crying. Her brother then writes "Cry Baby" on her birth certificate, taking his mother's comment literally. Cry Baby's birthday is likely to be on August 14 th, as that was when the album of the same name was released (which was the album she was born in, an infant, and a toddler). This is also supported by Cry Baby writing August on the invitations in the music video for Pity Party. In PORTALS, Cry Baby is reincarnated as a celestial being, seemingly from another planet. She has pink skin, 2 pairs of blue eyes, dark purple lips, and green hair that can vary in shades. She can be seen wearing various nature-inspired clothing, such as the mushroom shoes she wears in the " DEATH" music video, or the vegetation-like drapes she wears over herself during her setlist at Lollapalooza on March 18 th, 2023. She has a pair of wings shortly after her rebirth.

The official audio for the Christmas single Gingerbread Man is also still available on Melanie's YouTube channel All songs on the standard album have been certified gold by RIAA. All songs from the deluxe edition have also been certified gold. Cry Baby is also the main character of the deluxe songs " Play Date", " Teddy Bear", and " Cake", as well as the single " Gingerbread Man". However, these songs are not part of the album's narrative or Cry Baby's story. Melanie Martinez is credited as one of the artists that the producer and songwriter J Soundz has worked with. Starting her independent career, Melanie signed with Atlantic Records. In 2014, Melanie would release their debut EP Dollhouse, which introduced her alter-ego Cry Baby and would lay the foundation for their first studio album Cry Baby, which debuted August 14, 2015 and featured Kinetics and One Love as its producers. However, it was confirmed in an article in Alternative Press magazine that Cry Baby's sun sign is Taurus, which means that her birthday is sometime between April 20-May 20, as that is when Taurus season is. Melanie released a feature-film for her sophomore album, K-12, which features Cry Baby as the main character again.
