About this deal

What grade lining paper you use on a decorating project will be determined by the condition of the walls, how much preparation is needed and whether you are going to paint or wallpaper over the lining paper.

Depending on the state of your walls, lining paper is an important or even essential step in the renovation process. But like any home improvement product, it comes with a range of questions. How does it work? What benefits does it have? What are the different types? Look out for lining papers that contain PVC (polyvinylchloride) as this will make the material far less breathable. Why is it important for your walls to be able to breathe? Well, having air flowing in and out through your walls means that the quality of your air is constantly being replenished. This reduces the build-up of stagnant air within your home, lowering the level of any indoor pollutants. Before you start hanging lining paper you will need to prep the area you are working in. We are assuming that you have already prepped the walls. If not, see our section below on 'what's the best way to prepare a wall for lining paper?'. If possible empty the room you will be working in so you have full access to the walls and room for your pasting table. Alternatively, move your furniture to one side and cover the furniture and floor with dust sheets. If you are hanging horizontally you will get two full lengths per roll on a typical 12ft wall. Again you will need at least three rolls for each wall. In principle hanging lining paper is similar to hanging wallpaper with a few subtle differences, which we will tell you here.Allow at least 12 hours for drying if you are going to emulsion the walls and 24 hours if you are going to hang wallpaper over the lining paper, if you don’t the lining paper may come off the wall. Use a low sheen or matt paint as this is less reflective and helps hide imperfections. What grade of lining paper should I use? I have used the 2000 grade on a few rooms in the house and painted over it and I do think it is good quality lining paper. The problem I am facing is that in the final room I am trying to decorate – I discovered when I was attempting to strip it, that it had one layer of bamboo like textured paper which came off quite easily with a steamer but this was papered on top of another shell patterned textured paper and this shell paper was pasted directly onto drywall with no sealer coat. Trying to remove wallpaper from paper(the drywall paper lining) is proving almost impossible and I don’t want to damage the drywall itself in the process by either over wetting it or gouging it when trying to scrape the shell paper off.

Remember, lining paper isn’t a magic paper that will make your walls imperfection free, it will give you a smoother, sounder base to work from. Lining paper was designed as a base to wallpaper onto, however you can emulsion over lining paper without any problems. Finally, this extra layer of paper helps trap air in between the wall and the lining paper as well as between the lining paper and wallpaper. These two layers result in added insulation to your home. Should I Use Lining Paper? If you are wallpapering new plaster you will need a light grade lining paper as the wall will be completely smooth. This adds a little extra insulation and provides a great blank canvas for painting. Most professional decorators use lining paper before wallpapering a room but as a novice DIY-er, it can be difficult to know whether the added expense of buying and the time involved to hang lining paper is worth it in terms of the finished result. In a nutshell, the professionals wouldn’t use it unless they had to and in reality the condition of most walls, especially in older properties mean heavy duty lining paper is required. So as someone new to the world of lining paper, how do you choose which grade to use on walls that are certainly far from perfect? This article will guide you through when to choose 1700 grade lining paper and its uses. What is Lining Paper and What is the Grading System? Lower grades like 800-1000 are the best choice if you’re redecorating walls that are in a decent condition and you want a smooth surface to make things easier.

The two main types of lining paper are conventional lining paper and paste-the-wall lining paper. CONVENTIONAL LINING PAPER Both are relatively similar, although lining paper does have the advantage of simplicity. Freshly plastered walls will need to dry out completely before being adequately primed, so the plaster doesn’t absorb the moisture from your paint. You can do so using 1-2 coats of a specialist primer or a watered-down version of paint. Failure to do so properly can result in paint peeling off or wearing off further down the line when cleaning.Simply paste the adhesive directly onto the walls then put the paper straight onto them. It’s dimensionally stable, so it won’t expand or shrink. That means a better result, which is free of bubbles and lifting.

Whatever your query, we’re here to help. In this post, we’ll provide answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about lining paper. WHAT IS LINING PAPER AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR? Ideally try to introduce some gentle ambient heat into the area where the lining paper is to help it dry properly. This will also help the paint dry faster so you can use the room sooner. How many drops does a roll of lining paper do? Get a spirit level and mark a horizontal line across the wall from corner to corner. Measure how far it is from corner to corner. Now get your lining paper and cut — add an extra 100-200mm to overlap and cut into the corner. Now cut enough full length strips to cover the wall. You should need around five strips. Lining paper is a great choice if your walls are in good condition but are painted in a dark colour. For example, if you have dark brown walls and want to cover them with a white or light coloured paint you can forget about prepping (to a certain degree) the walls and you won’t have to apply specialist or extra coats of paint to ensure good coverage. It’s worth noting that pasting the wall is only an option with paste-the-wall lining paper and not conventional lining paper. Many have tried applying adhesive to the wall before applying conventional lining paper, and it’s fair to say the results are disastrous. WHICH IS BEST FOR ME?
