About this deal

If you do want to hang the lining paper vertically and wallpaper over the top. Start from the place where you are going to hang the first length of wallpaper and hang a half-width of lining paper. Continue with full widths across the rest of the wall. This is okay if the two papers are the same width, but be aware that lining papers are available in different widths. We recommend planning so that two lots of seams do not fall in the same place. Available in grades 800, 1000, 1200, 1400, 1700 and 2000, Erfurt MAV lining papers produce the perfect base for decorating with other wall coverings, emulsion painting and some paint effects. There is a grade suitable for all decorating applications. Lining paper is a great choice if your walls are in good condition but are painted in a dark colour. For example, if you have dark brown walls and want to cover them with a white or light coloured paint you can forget about prepping (to a certain degree) the walls and you won’t have to apply specialist or extra coats of paint to ensure good coverage.

To manually work out the number of rolls required, use this simple calculation: Step 1: Calculate the length of lining paper needed for one wall. This post will explain what grade lining paper you should choose for your project. From barely-there to heavy-duty, we’ll guide you through the difference between the grades so that you can cover your wall with confidence. Why should you use lining paper?

What specialist lining papers are available?

After allowing the paste to dry, your room is ready for a new top layer of wallpaper or coat of paint.

If your walls are in a poor to average condition you need to think about doing some prep before using a heavier grade lining paper such as 1700 or 2000. If unsure, go for the middle ground and use a 1400 grade. What's the best way to prepare a wall for lining paper? On the marks (deeper marks) you should really be using filler not a skim coating material like easyfil.

What grade lining paper you use on a decorating project will be determined by the condition of the walls, how much preparation is needed and whether you are going to paint or wallpaper over the lining paper. Divide the height of the wall (WH) by the width of the roll of lining paper (LPW) to get the length of lining paper needed for the wall (LPL). When preparing your walls, you may be wondering whether existing lining paper is a suitable surface for application. In short, it comes down to the condition of your existing paper. If joints are loose or corners are peeling, you’ll need to remove your existing lining paper. However, you can paper over existing lining paper if the wear and tear is merely superficial. ANY MORE QUESTIONS? Lining paper can improve your walls’ insulation properties, making it harder for heat to pass through. That’s especially true for thermal lining paper, which can reduce heat loss by 15%. The result is a more thermally efficient space, which is easier to keep warm – reducing your heating bills over time. WHAT GRADE OF LINING PAPER IS BEST FOR ME?

First and foremost, paste-the-wall is a superior alternative to conventional lining paper. Rather than pasting the paper and waiting for it to expand before applying to the walls, you simply paste the wall and apply the paste-the-wall lining paper directly. As well as being tougher and more resistant, the added textile fibres mean it won’t leave bubbles or lift away at the seams. Measuring your wall and doing some calculations. By doing these calculations you can avoid being left with a very thin strip of lining paper to hang at the base of the wall. If you are going to wallpaper after hanging lining paper the pro approach is to hang the lining paper horizontally. This helps ensure that the seam on the wallpaper and lining paper don’t match up and gives a strong secure finish. How long after hanging lining paper can I paint it? If you are hanging lining paper like this 1200 grade lining paper from B&Q horizontally you need to mark down around 10cm from the ceiling. Now measure each roll width — typically 53cm down the wall to see what size strip you have at the bottom. If you have a skinny strip, start further up the wall.Feeling a bit chilly? Lining paper provides additional layers of insulation that'll keep you toasty come the blustery winter months. It traps air between the paper and the wall, containing draughts to keep your home warmer for longer. Perhaps most importantly, you'll also save money on your next energy bill. What are the different types of lining paper? Our lining paper range includes standard lining paper that you apply adhesive to, or paste the wall lining paper. Paste the wall can be easier to hang as you apply the adhesive to the wall rather than the paper, so you don’t have heavy folded paper to hang. For paste the wall lining paper, we recommend using a paint roller to apply the adhesive to the wall. The two main types of lining paper are conventional lining paper and paste-the-wall lining paper. CONVENTIONAL LINING PAPER I've had good results so far by using Easifill on the marks. It goes on easily and is easy to sand to a really smooth finish. It's so good, in fact, that I'm considering using it across the whole walls. Would this be an option? Already tried a few slightly larger areas and looks good... Just a really (really) thin layer all across to fill all of the holes and get a smooth final result. Obviously skimming would be preferable, but the flat's 125m2, the budget's tight - and so far, this looks like it might work... Or really bad idea?

If you are going to use lining paper why do all this? Should it not be the case that lining paper will take most of the problems out? Just a thought. If you’re redecorating your walls, you may feel confused about which processes you’ll need to do. Lining paper vs plastering, lining paper vs skimming – how can you tell which will give you the perfect finish you’re after?None of it's by the book, I know... But we're loving the work so far and just trying to come up with solutions that we can manage and that keep costs down. All input on why the ideas are good/bad much appreciated! Lining paper delivers a flat finish that looks immaculate every time. It's convenient if you live in an old building because it seamlessly covers walls that have been redecorated and replastered. Most professional decorators use lining paper before wallpapering a room but as a novice DIY-er, it can be difficult to know whether the added expense of buying and the time involved to hang lining paper is worth it in terms of the finished result. In a nutshell, the professionals wouldn’t use it unless they had to and in reality the condition of most walls, especially in older properties mean heavy duty lining paper is required. So as someone new to the world of lining paper, how do you choose which grade to use on walls that are certainly far from perfect? This article will guide you through when to choose 1700 grade lining paper and its uses. What is Lining Paper and What is the Grading System?
