Alvin is the oldest of the Chipmunks as revealed in the episode Grounded Chipmunk after making the statement, " I've never been alone, except those five minutes before Simon was born." However in the 2015 series he is the middle child. Eleanor is the only main character chipmunk to not have her name in a title of an episode of any series to date.
Like Simon, Alvin is very protective of Theodore as shown in Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet the Wolfman where he saved Theodore from Nathan, the school bully for example. However the relationship between Alvin and Theodore is not always plain sailing despite them closer than at first glance. Alvin usually enjoys teasing and sometimes pushing Theodore around which upsets Theodore, which Alvin doesn’t always realize. He also drags Theodore into his schemes. Despite all of this, Alvin can have a soft spot especially when Theodore is scared or upset. Eleanor: Oh, my shoes? They're not. But um, Ian said I need to work on being taller. - ( The Squeakquel) Alvin is commonly portrayed as the charming one of the three. In the episode Dr. Simon and Mr. Heartthrob, he dresses stylishly and attempts to attract a group of visiting girls before being usurped by Simon, who drank a special kind of potion which granted him natural magnetism and charm. Eleanor is self-assured, clever, sweet, and confident. She is a gifted athlete, despite her larger physique. Eleanor is quite strong-willed and is far more likely than Jeanette to stand up to her sister Brittany when she feels that she is wrong.Ian Hawke's redemption when he lets go of his old grudge against Dave, the Chipmunks and the Chipettes by explaining to Zoe that revenge is not the solution, also preventing her from pushing Dave into the void at the same time.
In the CGI films, Eleanor has green eyes. She also has yellow fur and ponytail pigtails. In Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, Eleanor wears a dark green sweater over a lime green dress and a silver sparkle dress. Eleanor and Alvin are best friends. They both are very athletic and energetic. In games and tournaments, they have each other's support. Alvin: We edit the tape together, play it for Miss Miller, and we're on our way around the world! - ( The Chipmunk Adventure) Since college, Ian was Dave's roommate. However, he is no longer roommates with him, but is instead his "best friend" (but not a true one). This eventually led to Dave and Ian's bitter rivalry, thus breaking their friendship. However, in the third film, he starts off as Dave's rival, and later reforms and somehow becomes friends again with Dave, the Chipmunks, and the Chipettes.In the CGI/live-action films, Alvin has only worn his baseball cap in the 2007 movie (in a magazine and at the end). Alvin: We're not performing monkeys, Dave! Why do we have to sing for that guy anyway? - ( Alvin and the Chipmunks) In ALVINNN!!! and The Chipmunks, Alvin wears a red and blue-hooded sweater with his signature yellow "A" on it, which has a hole in the left sleeve, blue jeans, and red/orange/white converse sneakers. Alvin regains his signature red cap as a common accessory, but it now has green beneath the visor and red-orange on the top-visor. He has auburn hair and blue eyes. His pajamas consist of a t-shirt with a winged guitar illustration. Alvin: 3:00 in the morning and Prince Theodore has a craving for mushrooms! I hope he chokes on 'em! - ( The Chipmunk Adventure) Ian does not possess any superhuman or mystical powers, being an ordinary human, However, he was once a rather successful and rich businessman with great power, which he lost because of his own bullying nature: By the second film, Ian had been reduced to a pathetic excuse for a human being so devoid of power he was literally forced to wrestle with rats for food, though he was still good at manipulation (though he was considerably more skilled at it in the first film, his bitterness in the sequel making him a much more obvious villain). In the third film, Ian's personality hasn't changed. However, in the end, he somewhat restores his friendship with Dave, the Chipmunks, and the Chipettes and isn't evil and sneaky.
Ian Hawke has appeared in every Alvin and the Chipmunks film except for Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip.During the 2000-era, Alvin was, and is, known as the self-appointed "leader" of the group. And, presumably meaning The Alvin Show, he suffered from small "munk" complex and tried to make up for it with his grand schemes and animal magnetism. Eleanor and Simon are good friends, Simon been cooperated and cares more towards Eleanor is shown in the episode A Knight's Tail, which Simon helping her, while staying up awake all night for 'building an Armour' in leading the way for her, winning the knight's competition. Eleanor: I don't get it. Why are people willing to kill for these dolls? - ( The Chipmunk Adventure) Alvin can be impulsive which people, especially Dave, find bothersome. At times, Alvin's determination can be viewed as nuts. As a result of his constant habit of reacting to opportunity, Alvin has gotten his brothers and himself in trouble at times such as the balloon race in The Chipmunk Adventure and a large number of episodes. Over the years, he had crushes (or interests) on many human female characters. Some examples include Miss Fancy from the 60s episode Fancy, Sandy the Babysitter and his math teacher Miss Stone from the 80s series episode Romancing Miss Stone, Dena from Funny, We Shrunk the Adults, Becca in The Squeakquel, and Principal Meadows from the ALVINNN!!! series.
James Suggs is the new main antagonist of Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip. Suggs is similar to Ian, but he has bigger plans than Ian. In the CGI/live-action films, Alvin only wears a red hoodie with a yellow 'A' on it. His appearance was modified to look closer to a real life chipmunk. He has brown fur as well as brown eyes. In the 2007 Alvin and the Chipmunks, Alvin is only seen wearing his signature cap twice; the first time on a magazine cover and the second at the end of the movie. Ian Hawke was supposed to become a major protagonist in Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, where he helps Dave propose to Samantha and getting David Cross to reprise his role in the film. However, David Cross did not return to play Ian Hawke in the fourth film as his contract only stipulated he starred in three Chipmunks films. Quotes Eleanor: But we've never been scuba diving. And, and who knows what's down there? - ( The Chipmunk Adventure) Alvin and Jeanette are friends. In My Sister The Weirdo, is one example in which Jeanette trusts in Alvin's abilities, such as his confidence, to help herself out. When Alvin acts out, Jeanette will be firm with him (similar to how she is with Brittany sometimes). She also helps Alvin out with her wise words.
