Feuerstein JD, Cheifetz AS. Crohn disease: Epidemiology, diagnosis, and management. Mayo Clin Proc. 2017;92:1088-1103. doi:10.1016/j.mayocp.2017.04.010 a colonoscopy – a thin, flexible tube with a camera at the end is inserted into your bottom to look for inflammation in your bowel

Computed tomography (CT) scan: A CT scan creates images of the digestive tract. It tells your healthcare provider how severe the intestinal inflammation is. Some blood tests look at how active certain genes are. The results are analysed to look for patterns that might help doctors work out if you are at high risk or low risk of getting severe inflammation. This could help your IBD team work out the most appropriate treatment for you. Look for polyps -- polyps are small fleshy growths on the inner lining of the bowel that may rarely, over time, become cancerous. Before the scan, you will need to drink large amounts of liquid and avoid eating for a few hours. You may be given a contrast dye before the scan, which helps show more detail of the gut on the scans taken. Finding out you have a long-term condition can trigger lots of different feelings and emotions. Almost half of people living with Crohn’s or Colitis say it has affected their mental health. Our Mental health and wellbeing information can help you understand the ways your condition may affect you emotionally, and has tips on looking after yourself. Having contrast into your veins can affect your kidney function. You may need to have a kidney function blood test before your scan.

Causes of Crohn's disease

When preparing for any diagnostic tests, speak with your doctor to find out how to prepare for each upcoming test. This could include avoiding specific foods, fasting, avoiding certain medications or supplements, avoiding smoking, or avoiding intense physical activity. White blood cells - numbers of white blood cells can be higher when there is inflammation or infection in the body or lowered by medicines such as azathioprine. Women with Crohn’s disease can, and usually do, have normal pregnancies. Your healthcare provider may recommend trying to conceive while the disease is in remission. Flare-ups during pregnancy may increase the risk of:
