About this deal

In this variation of the game, playing an Ace captures all cards currently on the table (and does not count as a scopa). Scopone Scientifico: Same as scopone, but instead of 9 cards, each player is dealt 10 cards. This means there are no card in the middle at the start of a game. Capture the 6 of swords and ace of coins using the 7 of clubs, and place all three cards face down in front of themselves. It is rewarding to investigate these mysteries for their own sake, but they were not necessarily intended to be part of the original game.

If tarot had been invented somewhere else, say in South America, then it might have been Inca or Mayan world view).

Non-Italian suits in Italy

In some regions of Calabria (especially near Cosenza), a point is awarded for the seven of cups in addition to the seven of coins. The Tarot de Marseille derives from the Milanese style of tarot, with the names of the court cards and trumps added at the bottom. It first began appearing in the mid 1600s. Capturing cards is the essence of Scopa. If the played card is equal in rank to a card on the table, this card is captured and the player collects both cards. If there is no card of equal rank but multiple cards of which the ranks sum up to the player card, all these cards are captured.

The Ace of Coins features a double-headed eagle with two open circles; the lower circle was traditionally for the tax stamp. Unlike other trump card games, players are not required to follow suit, that is, to play the same suit as the lead player. The hand-painted tarot cards, which date probably from the first half of the fifteenth century, contain 78 cards. Italy did not form a single kingdom; several important ducal dynasties included the Visconti's, the Borgia's and the Scaliger's.

Alternatively, the game can accommodate 4 players, divided into two evenly matched teams, with each player strategically positioned between two opponents for added excitement and challenge. Rex's main interest was in card games, because, he said, they were cheap and easy to get hold of in his early days of collecting. He is well known for his extensive knowledge of Pepys games and his book is on the bookshelves of many. Likewise, if a player is holding a six and there are an ace, a two, a four, and a five on the table, they should choose the five plus the ace, unless they have already taken the seven or the six of the suit of the ace and unless one of the two remaining cards is of the coins suit and they have not made the point of coins yet. If two or more teams or players capture the same number of cards, the same number of coin cards, or the same prime value, no point is awarded for that result, e.g. if both team 1 and team 2 capture 20 cards total, neither gets a point for the most cards. If you cannot (or choose not to) take a card, you must leave a card on the table. The card remains there to be captured by you or the other player in a future turn. Capturing CardsCards from Southern Italy, including Sicily, are closer in design to Spanish cards. It is here that the Spaniards had come to Italy bringing with them their beloved playing cards and gambling habits.

One-scopa bonus'. If the four cards dealt by the dealer to the table at the start of a round add up to 15, the dealer captures them and marks a scopa. Cards of Spanish design occur in those parts of Italy formerly under Spanish influence ( Neapolitan, Piacentine, Romagnole, Sardinian and Sicilian patterns) although the ‘pintas’ or line-breaks in the outer frames have been lost. Early examples of the Piacentine pattern also have features related to French Aluette cards. This was accompanied by the publication of new treatises on all sorts of emerging scientific subjects.

Primiera Bolognese and Tarocco Bolognese

The arrangement of the suit symbols and accompanying decorations are also reminiscent of the Mamluk Playing Cards from the Topkapu Museum in Istanbul. The most common version of the separate scale is: seven = 21 points, six = 18 points, ace = 16 points, five = 15 points, four = 14 points, three = 13 points, two = 12 points, King = 10 points This is followed in 1379 by another reference from Viterbo (in the vicinity of Rome) in which it is claimed that a new game called 'nayb' Tarot cards were invented during the early 15th century in northern Italy as a permanent suit of trumps ( trionfi). Italian-suited cards are rarely found outside of Northern Italy. In the past, however, tarot cards based on those from Milan, the Tarot of Marseilles, spread to France and Switzerland in the 16th century and later to Austria and parts of Western Germany in the 18th century before being replaced by French-suited tarots during the 18th and 19th centuries. In a few places in Switzerland, the Italian-suited Swiss 1JJ Tarot is still used for games. For example, if one team captures the sevens of Cups and Coins, the six of Clubs and the Ace of Swords, that team’s prime is (21 + 21 + 18 + 16) = 76.
