His wife's correspondence reveals that her elderly mother in law is domineering leading to a poisoned relationship between the three of them in the household. This is an ongoing attempt at a comprehensive listing of the Penguin Maigret editions/printings, with cover images. Books with years shown in green are volumes I don't have, and so are unconfirmed. Apparently all but five* of the Maigrets have been issued in Penguin editions.

I have only one complaint about this series, and this book in particular: they go by too fast. This was my favorite so far--a woman Maigret arrested years ago for theft who embarrassed him by stripping naked and refusing to go with him (and who is the "tall woman" of the title) comes to him to ask him find her boyfriend, a thief who discovered a dead woman while robbing an affluent dentist. But when Maigret investigates there is no body and the dentist denies having been robbed. Sad Freddie is a habitual burglar who finds a corpse while attempting to steal from her house. His wife Ernestine was a prostitute in her younger days and knows Maigret. Theme music and various incidental music was composed by Ron Grainer [6] for which he won an Ivor Novello award. I understand that this is a new translation, but only having read the novels in French many years ago I have no comparison point. It reads extremely well and seems to fit the period. There have been numerous incarnations of Maigret on the small screen all around the world. He has been portrayed by French, British, Irish, Austrian, German, Italian, Dutch, Japanese, and Russian actors. A French version, Les Enquêtes du Commissaire Maigret, starred Jean Richard in 88 episodes between 1967 and 1990; [19] however, Simenon himself is said to have disliked Richard's Maigret because he would not take his hat off when entering a room. While this isn't his best work - it is, after all, the 38th novel in the series - it still brings to life the magic that was Paris in days gone by; still evokes that classic mystery whodunit atmosphere; and still provides one of the more intelligent resolutions in any crime fiction. Other prominent characters include police surgeon Dr. Paul and the Examining Magistrate, Judge Coméliau, who alternates between being a help and a hindrance to Maigret. The series starred Rupert Davies as the Police Judiciaire detective Commissaire Jules Maigret, who took up the role in 1960 after Basil Sydney, who had played Maigret in the pilot episode, was unable to continue.
