About this deal

Let us pray to God, that he will bring to fruition … The Lord’s Prayer Song or Hymn Blessing or Dismissal

These prayers are particularly suitable as closing prayers for a non-eucharistic service. Though they do not refer explicitly to the sacrament, some of them could also be used as a Post Communion prayer, or as part of the Dismissal in a service of Holy Communion. The prayers printed in bold type are suitable for the whole congregation to join in. Praise may be said or sung. Select hymns, songs or items from the Praise section of New Patterns or elsewhere. See here for further ideas. A set of versicles and responses (see here for examples) may be used in the Preparation or elsewhere. 6 Action First, making the response unvarying, short and memorable, introduced each time with the same ‘cue line’. Customs vary on the solemnity with which this is done. In some places, variable prayers may be used. These should be preparatory, as the title for this part implies, and not dramatically overshadow the Eucharistic Prayer. The Eucharistic Prayer Loving God, as we see the brokenness of our world we pray for healing among the nations; for food where there is hunger; for freedom where there is oppression; for joy where there is pain; that your love may bring peace to all your children. The Lord’s Prayer

Blessings

If this Thanksgiving is used as an extended preface to a eucharistic prayer it should be in this form let us exalt his name together. Sermon Response to God’s Word Song(s) or Hymn Thanksgiving for the Healing Ministry of the Church A dismissal, ending or blessing should be the last item in any service, and should not normally be followed by a hymn or more prayers. Notes to the resources This might include the Song of Saint Anselm, the Affirmation of Faith and the Prayers of Intercession; It is best not to mix the forms too much, though a set prayer may be a good way to end or sum up one of the other forms. The Lord’s Prayer and a collect should be used at every Sunday service. 5 Praise

A good deal will depend on whether this service is intended to be the main Sunday service for the Fourth Sunday of Lent or a ‘special’ service at some other time on that day. We praise you, our God, for Jesus, born of a woman and nurtured in her love, and for Mary, a reminder of your patient, waiting love. Biddings might be offered, interspersed with silence. Initially these should relate to the local incident but they should also include suffering experienced throughout the world. The forms of intercession in this section may replace the intercessions in the Holy Communion, or be used in the prayer section of A Service of the Word, or after the third collect in Morning or Evening Prayer ( The Book of Common Prayer) or after the Creed in Morning or Evening Prayer on Sundays. They may also be used at eucharistic or non-eucharistic services on weekdays. Responses for prayers of intercession The St Dodo’s Praise Service has no apparent structure at all – and so, one or two people say, must be led by the Spirit. There is little content, with only one of the lectionary readings (irrelevant to the theme of praise) and the sermon is replaced by long introductions by four different people to four of the hymns. People in the congregation are encouraged to suggest items to give thanks for or to sing (sometimes without the congregation having the words because it is assumed everyone knows them), with the inevitable result that there is no development in the service and no one quite knows when it should come to an end. But a liturgical structure used without preparation can produce equally bad results. Last week the president got a bit lost in Eucharistic Prayer E, used a Short Preface rather than an extended one, with the result that no one knew when to come in with ‘Holy, holy …’ Notes to the resources Acclamations and praise responsesThese intercessions are especially suitable for a service for the commemoration of the faithful departed, but may appropriately be used at other times. This may include a sermon or talk, discussion, and activities for different age groups. It continues with the Affirmation of Faith and the Prayers. Affirmation of Faith Some of the praise responses are suitable for saying or singing together, rather than in responsive form. These are marked with an asterisk*. Thanksgivings If it is desired to give a blessing, the section, ‘Let us bless the Lord …’ should be omitted. For all the Church Family Be prepared to throw it away after using it, and to do it differently next time. Notes to the resources

If this Thanksgiving is used as an extended preface to a eucharistic prayer, it should follow this form Other elements that are compulsory, but may vary in form. All of the authorized forms of confession and absolution from Common Worship may be found in Section B. When A Service of the Word with a Celebration of Holy Communion is being used, the readings must be governed by an authorized lectionary, but the Creed could be the Apostles’ Creed or an authorized Affirmation of Faith. All those currently authorized may be found in Section E.inviting a grandmother to speak about what it is like to be a grandparent, including any advice she has for new parents, or any things she wishes she had done differently when her children were young. inviting a grandfather to speak about what it is like to be a grandparent, including any advice he has for new parents, or any things he wishes he had done differently when his children were young.
