About this deal

The locomotive, or rather, locomotives, depict the Empress of India, affectionately referred to as “Victoria”, a once fine, but now elderly and neglected locomotive. Her coach, abandoned as unserviceable, seems of equal antiquity. The movie was shot in India and it gives a very realistic look - especially the trains and the rural stations. Contrary to what many in the Western Hemisphere believe, the movie shows that not all Indians in that time were illiterate (Gupta speaks reasonably good English). During peacetime the Force was under the direct control of the Lt.- Governor of the Punjab, [97] but in war it came under the Commander-in-Chief, India. [71] a b Quarterly Indian Army List January 1919, p. 1251.Known as Denniss Ka Pultan; Correspondence of Lt.Col. George Gladwin Denniss II(1821-1862), 1st European Bengal Fusiliers, edited by Peter Chantler, South Molton, Devon, 2010. Denniss was eldest son of Lt.Col. George Gladwin Denniss I(1792-1856), C.B., Bengal Royal Horse Artillery.

Anyway, the purpose of the comparison would be to see if there was a source for European civilians compatible with the war-games figures. Mike Pett has an Edwardian gentleman raising his hat to 2 (vaguely) Edwardian ladies. His boater could easily be swapped for a panama or a topee.During the First World War the cavalry branch of the Corps was deployed overseas to Mesopotamia, but not before winning a further honour in its own territory; 'N.W. F RONTIER I NDIA 1915'. [50] In many ways the Te-rain is the star of the 1959 film, North West Frontier. As Paul/Dzine pointed out in his article, the train starts out in India, running on metre gauge, and continues on a broader gauge in Spain, matters not hitherto noticed by Yours Truly. In 1905 on the North West Frontier of British India, a maharajah asks British Army Captain Scott to take his young son, Prince Kishan, to Haserabad and then send him to Delhi to protect him from an uprising. Accompanying them is the prince's governess, an American widow named Mrs. Wyatt. They leave as the rebels storm the palace and kill the prince's father. This makes his six-year-old son the leader of the Hindu population in the region. Hedda Hopper (31 October 1958). "Looking at Hollywood: British Star Herbert Lom Scores Hit in Hollywood". Chicago Daily Tribune. The last decade of the 19th century saw the Guides employed in the Chitral campaign of 1895, and the Punjab Frontier Revolt of 1897–8. Thus was the corps awarded the battle honours 'C HITRAL', 'M ALAKAND', and 'P UNJAB F RONTIER'.

The Frontier Revolt of 1897-8 saw the Kohat and Derajat batteries in action again, earning the honours T IRAH and P UNJAB F RONTIER. [102]Chekhov's Skill: Mrs Wyatt is one of the only civilians on the train who knows how to use a gun. Which comes in handy when Scott is fighting Van Leyden. No. 2 Horse Light Field Battery, PIF, raised at Bannu in 1851 by Lt. H. Hammond, from detachments of horse artillery formerly in the service of the Lahore Darbar. [88]

Most of the force saw action during the Second Afghan War. The designation Punjab Frontier Force was dropped in 1901, but with the Kitchener Reforms of the British Indian Army two years later, the former distinction was restored to the newly re-numbered regiments in the form of the subsidiary title Frontier Force. H. S. Mahle (1985). Indo-Anglian fiction: some perceptions: including some lectures on Karnadʾs Tughlaq. Jainsons Publications. p.24 . Retrieved 5 April 2011. One crucial difference between this film and Ice Cold in Alex is that in North West Frontier, the characters are actually fleeing ‘British’ territory – they are escaping part of the British Empire over which control has been lost. This may not be intentionally symbolic on the part of the filmmakers since it goes completely unremarked and unexamined. This simple fact, however, seems very revealing at a time when decolonisation was beginning in earnest. In the context of 1959 and the new status of the United States as Top Nation, it is highly significant that it is Lauren Bacall (as the American governess, the widowed Catherine Wyatt) who shoots Van Leyden, thus saving Captain Scott. This must surely have been very meaningful to a 1959 cinema audience, most of whom had recently lived through the Second World War, in which the USA came to Britain’s aid. The brigades Frontier designation was discontinued in 1847, and the four regiments became Sikh Local Infantry. I first saw North West Frontier when I was rather young and is one of those movies which you tend to never forget. I even have some Indian troops in 1/72nd, intended for deployment against the Ottomans in Mesopotamia or Arabia and the Germans in East Africa in WW1. I see these regions are within you areas of interest too. Fancy the Hejaz railway next? It may interest you to know that, on "dress up as a famous Briton day" last week, we sent our daughter to school dressed as Gertrude Bell! The Frontier Corps were not founded expressly on a tribal basis, but the older corps drew their recruits from the local tribal area:
