Just remember you need to use a gentle stomping motion instead of your normal walk to get the spikes to properly penetrate the ground. Rolling aerators are great because they allow you to aerate your lawn efficiently, without the cost of buying an electric walk-behind aerator.

What does aerating your lawn actually do?

These are usually aerator/scarifier combo products and not strictly aerators in the purest sense. They are very powerful and do not require a lot of tiring work from you to operate. The problem with these lawn aerators is that they can tear up your lawn pretty badly. For some reason, BMC decided to make the handle in a broom style instead of a T-shaped handle and I didn’t like this. It actually didn’t make the aerator hard to push forward, but I just think a T-shaped handle would have been a better choice for applying downward pressure. At 4 feet the handle is long enough so that you don’t have to stoop down too much while using the tool. For most lawns, you want to aerate about once a year, or every spring. However, if your soil is very compacted, or your lawn gets a lot of foot traffic, you may want to aerate more often – up to 5-6 times per year, during the spring, summer, and autumn. Whilst these aerator shoes are fairly easy to use, it’s worth noting that they work best if your lawn is watered thoroughly before use. When the soil is very dry, the spikes can be difficult to push into the ground. You’ll also need to get used to walking in these aerator shoes, as it can be a little hard to maintain balance.

Over time, your soil can become compressed, due to a combination of foot traffic, wet weather, and having soil with a higher than average clay content.

Hollow tine aerators look just like a garden fork. They’re much less efficient than rolling aerators, due to their small size, however they penetrate much more deeply. Secondly, pitchfork spikes are not particularly sharp. Pitchforks aren’t designed specifically for making holes in grass, so they will require you to use a lot of effort to aerate your lawn. The main benefit of this design is it makes the lawn aerator easier to push on very compacted soil. It’s able to roll smoothly, rather than each individual nail having to penetrate the ground separately.
