I needed a book to listen to while on a walk, and the audio of this just happened to come in at the perfect time.
There used to be gradations when it came to describing the feminine ideal: homely, jolie laide, attractive, pretty, and ultimately, beautiful. The homely woman managed as best she could. She adjusted to the fact that her looks were not her most distinguishing feature. She was the woman with the terrific personality. Striking women had some characteristic that made them stand out: bountiful lips, an aristocratic nose, a glorious poitrine. A lot of women could be described as attractive. They were at the center of the bell curve. Pretty was another level. Hollywood is filled with pretty people. In the West, the legacy media are now sharing influence with digital media, social media, and a new generation of writers and editors who came of age in a far more multicultural world—a world that has a more fluid view of gender. The millennial generation, those born between 1981 and 1996, is not inclined to assimilate into the dominant culture but to stand proudly apart from it. The new definition of beauty is being written by a selfie generation: people who are the cover stars of their own narrative. To see the beauty in a woman’s rippling muscles is to embrace her strength but also to shun the notion that female beauty is equated with fragility and weakness. Pure physical power is stunning.

In New York, London, Milan, and Paris—the traditional fashion capitals of the world—the beauty codes have changed more dramatically in the past 10 years than in the preceding hundred. Historically, shifts had been by degrees. Changes in aesthetics weren’t linear, and despite fashion’s reputation for rebelliousness, change was slow. Revolutions were measured in a few inches. Today suggesting that a person is not gorgeous is to risk social shunning or at least a social media lashing. What kind of monster declares another human being unattractive? To do so is to virtually dismiss that person as worthless. It’s better to lie. Of course you’re beautiful, sweetheart; of course you are. Workplace ambition typically falls into one of three categories: performance, growth, or achievement. But what’s key is finding a balance between all three because well-rounded career ambitions ensure you’re creating the right work-life balance while feeling professionally satisfied. Camille Kroely: I believe we will move from consumer journeys that are already off- and online, to off-chain and on-chain on the metaverse. We can see that the metaverse and Web3 are already impacting creative codes of real life. If you take, for example, the way people do their makeup—they can already get inspiration from the metaverse and 3D creators.
When I look at photographs of groups of women on vacation, or a mother with her child, I see friendship and loyalty, joy and love. I see people who seem exuberant and confident. Perhaps if I had the opportunity to speak with them, I’d find them intelligent and witty or incredibly charismatic. If I got to know them and like them, I’m sure I’d also describe them as beautiful. Having a vision: You can only work toward achieving something if you truly understand what it is and how to get there, and visualization techniques assist this process. Methods like defining your company’s vision or journaling about your desires help you build a more meaningful trajectory.Camille Kroely: Upskilling is now part of our roadmap. In fact, one of the first things that we did with our executive committee members was to train and upskill them so that they can keep learning by themselves—such as opening their own wallets, customizing their avatars, testing the platform, and going on Roblox. We learn by doing things ourselves. How do you ensure that the L’Oréal Group brands maintain their brand DNA when they’re showing up in these new ways in virtual experiences?
Moss was disruptive to the beauty system, but she was still well within the industry’s comfort zone of defining beauty as a white, European conceit. So too were the youthquake models of the 1960s such as Twiggy, who had the gangly, curveless physique of a 12-year-old boy. The 1970s brought Lauren Hutton, who stirred scandal simply because she had a gap between her teeth. The original aim of AONBs when they were set up more than 70 years ago, was to preserve the UK’s finest landscapes and promote enjoyment. This developed into conserving, enhancing, and now, recovery is also a sad but much-needed ingredient. There is a movement to actively rest, renew and rather than conserve what we have. There is a constant balance to be made between encouraging tourism which boost the local economy, with the tolerances of nature and landscapes that provide the opportunities. Climate change In life, you display your ambition in subtle and not-so-subtle ways to those around you, whether it’s by taking proactive steps in improving your mental health by seeking a mental health professional or making strides in your professional development by starting a small business. It also subtly impacts your mindset, causing you to strive to do better, sustain your efforts, and think of the future but still be present. You know, when I write about people, I have no delusion that they are my friends and that I have to make them happy. And so even though I’ve sort of known Emily over the years, the role has always been that of, like, journalist and subject. I knew that she was not the kind of person who would probably love anything written about her, because I just don’t think that’s in her nature, and it is, frankly, a weird thing — to be written about.If you need some healthy habits to support the goals you’re chasing, try these out. 1. Find a social group with similar goals An edited version of the conversation follows. How critical is digital in driving innovation in the beauty sector?
The idea here was to bring these two brands into hair and makeup to create new looks for people who are more creative, pushing the technology, and are also more inclusive. The truth is that with hair and makeup, there is not that much available today for people to express themselves. However, creators don’t necessarily have the scientific or hair knowledge to express the way they could be represented in virtual reality. So we have makeup and hair artists who have worked with 3D creators to create looks that push the platform’s technology. You’re only as successful as the goals you set, so make them specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. Not everyone can become an astronaut or Olympic athlete. You need to balance your well-being and available resources with the right amount of challenge so you feel motivated by and capable of achieving your goals. 6. Leverage your motivatorsAs Asmita mentioned, the metaverse is also about building a new ecosystem and offering our brands new possibilities to express themselves. We’re now partnering with OpenSea, the leading marketplace for NFT and digital collectibles, to explore loyalty on-chain. We are also in partnership with Meta, and with Station F, one of the world’s largest business incubators for start-ups, for us to help accelerate start-ups. To grow creativity and inclusivity in the metaverse and to help our brand tap into new opportunities, we have just selected five start-ups that are now in Station F. How do you think the metaverse can influence beauty in the real world? The catalyst for our changed understanding of beauty has been a perfect storm of technology, economics, and a generation of consumers with sharpened aesthetic literacy.
