About this deal

It has a flexible, mechanically manipulated base that is in two parts and can be adjusted to change the curvature. Pro Tip: I tend to install strings so the end of the wrapped section is just about touching the "cheek" (inside of the peg box) so the peg is held in place better by friction. Pro Tip: Remember to use a dry, soft cotton cloth after each practice to wipe down and remove the rosin from your strings, fingerboard, top plate and other parts. Rain Fly - This is the flap of durable fabric that, similar to a tent fly, covers the zipper and protects the opening of the case from getting wet. All my Fiddleheads' brand of cases all have some manner of rain fly, with some having a partial-length rain fly just covering under the handle where the zippers meet, and others having a full-length rain fly covering the entire edge of the case.

Mother of Pearl - Sometimes confused with Abalone, this is a colourful, almost prismatic material obtained from the inside of shells of oysters, mussels, and (ironically) abalone. It can be found in shells of salt and freshwater species and is implemented as a decorative inlay on bows ( slide and eye) as well as other fittings and sometimes (novelty) violins themselves. Violins are not wide enough to fully cover the distancesbetween the collarbones of some violinists and their jawlines. Personal Story: I was the Concertmaster of my high school orchestra for three years in California in the 90s and the Assistant Concertmaster for a year before that. More recently I served for several years as the Concertmaster of both community orchestras in my city, the Kamloops Brandenburg Orchestra (Baroque and Classical music in period costume) and the Thompson Valley Orchestra (performing pops/film scores & classics). REVIEW: Google, 5 stars] Rhiannon was very helpful with setting me up with the right accessories for improved comfort with my violin and her expertise is greatly appreciated!Synthetic Viola bows

Synthetic, or often referred to as Carbon fibre Viola bows (although not all are carbon fibre), are consistent and often comparable to much more expensive wooden Viola bows. It is therefore possible to produce a very reliable, balanced and consistent Viola at a very reasonable price. Synthetic and Carbon Fibre Viola bows are not affected by temperature variations so are an excellent choice if playing outside. It also means they are highly resistant to warping due to tension or humidity.

Many musicians will not perform without a shoulder rest, but, there are a variety of benefits that shoulder rests offer to violinists and there are several reasons why it may be a good idea for you to use a shoulder rest with your violin. It is easy to install and provides a good range of adjustment features, which allow the user to find the perfect fit.

I’ve tried one foam shoulder rest in the last few years, and that was the Poly-Pad. This is a great option for kids and beginners to feel more comfortable holding the instrument! When I first started, I had a “pillow” that was a piece of foam wrapped in velvet, and held onto the violin with rubber bands. It was a comfortable way to ease into holding the violin! This shoulder rest has sturdy rubber feet, and no exposed metal or sharp plastic that could damage your instrument. It stays on really well, and I’ve never had any problems with it. Synthetic Cello bows

Synthetic, or often referred to as Carbon fibre Cello bows (although not all are carbon fibre), are consistent and often comparable to much more expensive wooden cello bows. It is therefore possible to produce a very reliable, balanced and consistent bow for a low price. Synthetic or Carbon Fibre Cello bows are not affected by temperature variations so are an excellent choice if playing outside. It also means they are highly resistant to warping or losing their spring.

Amati - The surname of of a family of Italian luthiers from Cremona from the mid 1500s to the mid 1700s. Their importance is considered equal to those of the Stradivari and Guarneri families. Andrea Amati ( c. 1505 – December 20, 1577) is the father of the violin family and designed and constructed the first instruments of this class (violin, viola and cello), creating a standard for others to emulate. Nicolò Amati (December 3, 1596 – April 12, 1684) was Girolamo Amati's son and became the most famous and respected in the family, having trained Antonio Stradivari and Andrea Guarneri himself. A contemporary violin made in the Amati pattern is usually one inspired by Nicolò. Mute - These are small objects designed to attach to the bridge or just behind the bridge of the instrument. That tiny little bridge acts as a microphone for the instrument and by adding more weight/bulk to the bridge in the form of a mute, the sound wave vibrations are stifled and absorbed, which results in a softer sound with less overtones. Think of it as putting your hand over your mouth to stifle a yell at your kids; the original message is there, but it is less likely to get you sent to jail. Same effect with the violin mute, an object who has earned a fun and educational article.Fun Fact: Some young fern species are called "fiddlehead" ferns owing to their shape just before they unfurl. You can see this shape in my adorable green logo. Fiddlehead ferns are edible and I have recipes here! Helpful Hint: Not all cases have room inside for a BonMusica shoulder rest, so you may need a separate bag to carry it and your music. These cases I sell accommodate a Bon Musica, and these cases are likely but not guaranteed to accommodate one. Fun Fact: Some novelty violins use mother of pearl or other materials but the tone of these instruments is almost always secondary to the aesthetics as such materials usually add bulk and limit vibrations. Ball-end or Loop-end string - The simple mechanism at the tailpiece end of the string. The ball is inserted through and catches inside the special narrow gaps in the tailpiece or is held in place by a fine tuner. Loop ends are held in place by a tiny hook on a Hill style fine tuner (usually only used on the E-string). I have written before about the debate around whether to use a shoulder rest. Today I am going to share with you my magic shoulder rest position. No, seriously. Magic!

I recommend the BonMusica, since it can be bent into whatever shape you need. (Maybe a cheaper option for someone interested in the Pirastro KorfkerRest?) I think the Poly-Pad is also a great option, because you can cut the foam to whatever shape you need. (It’s not really meant for that, but it would be easy to do!) Jargar Strings Jargar strings for violin, viola, cello and double bass. Handmade is a word that is seldom used today in relation to strings yet Jargar still upholds the tradition in their home town of Copenhagen in Denmark. Skilled string makers attend with care, dedication and professional pride to produce the Jargar strings we know so well that produce a unique and characteristic warm and brilliant sound Jargar Violin strings Jargar violin strings are chromesteel wound on steel, and come in three gauges: Dolce, Medium, and Forte. After fitting Jargar strings it is recommended not to immediately tune up to pitch, instead you should bring them up slowly over a few hours. Available for full-size violins only. Jargar Viola strings Jargar viola strings have been a long time favourite for violists possessing a powerful and robust tone. Available in Medium, Dolce and Forte gauges. Steel core with chrome winding. Jargar Cello strings Jargar cello chromesteel strings have a clear, bright response, with ample power and projection. Available as a set or individually, in Medium, Forte (heavy), or Dolce (soft) gauges and now in smaller sizes. New to the range are the A & D Superior with enhanced volume & power in 3… The most distinctive part of the Bon Musica, this is the wide piece that hooks over the player's shoulder. Padding is attached. String Tube - Gut core strings are best stored straight (not coiled) and so some higher-end cases come with a string tube. It's the long plastic mystery tube with caps that attaches to the inside top of your case just below the bows. I say mystery tube because of all the questions I get about cases, the most common one is regarding the purpose of the plastic tube.Should you need just the hex nut, this can be replaced with metric automotive nuts. Visit your local auto parts store to replace it. We found the hex nuts are pink metal in Canada. Also, adjust the portion nearest the G String SHORTER, and adjust the portion toward the E string TALLER. Most shoulder rests have a longer screw for the E string foot than the G string foot. This is where shoulder rests shine, due to the fact that many of their heights can be easily adjusted and modified to provide whatviolinistsneed.
